I thought the polarized lenses / anti-glare coating was supposed to reduce this effect actually, though I may be wrong.

It does to a certain point. At night watching the t.v. there is no glare as same with the lcd monitor on the pc/laptop. But however extreme bright lights it will not help much, example a new street light, as i mentioned it will cast a big halo around it. As the old streets light will not have a halo. But for the most part it does a pretty decent job just can't do every light though.
