Sure, but that's not what I'm suggesting.

TDs = 6 points (+1 usually).
FGs = 3 points.

In OT, FGs have an inflated value. Check out the last 10 or 15 overtime games. How many were won with a TD?

Then you might as well go college OT rules...

its the benefit of having a good kicker and playing against a defense that apparently cant stop anyone.

my problem with that is if your beyond 15 yards and beat, defenender is better off just tackling the guy.
Shrug,currently if the ball is not in the air it's still better to knock the reciever down/hold the shit out of him than give up the possible long play. 5 yards and automatic 1st down.

If you roll the two into the college style PI, I think it would work. Yea it sucks for the 50+ pass, but it's still a 15yd. penalty.

Why do we need to have the kicker be the pivotal player in OT? What is this, soccer?
why are you belittling soccer?

Going back to your point of "what coaches normally do" I think proves the point.

Quote:

But which scenario comes closest to regulation game play:

1) 1st and 10 at the opposing 30. Offense goes play action pass, gains 7 yards. 2nd & 3, offense runs off tackle for 1. 3rd and 2, offense goes pass, incomplete. 4th down, kicks FG.

2) 1st and 10 at the opposing 30. Offense goes run up the middle, gains 3 yards. 2nd & 7, offense runs off tackle for 1. 3rd and 6, QB kneels to spot the FG. 4th down, kicks FG.
Often times at the end of the game coaches DO elect to take knees to wind the clock down without risking an int or fumble. Overtime SHOULD play differently than regulation. The current overtime system captures the end of the game situation and I believe that is prudent given most games would have ended before overtime occurred.
I mean had a team driven down in the last two minutes regulation and kicked a fg, you wouldn't give the other team "their chance" would you? No you would have told them to get more than a tie in the presiding 58 minutes or told them defense and special teams are part of the game.

I actually like Dom's suggestion from a purely football point of view.

But from a practical one, it's about TV air time, baby. Ergo, Sudden Death (not really overtime) ends the game.

Better than the Heidi Bowl alternative, believe me.
