Default Elite WR's
I've been trying to remember who the last elite reciever to win a Super Bowl was...I'm starting to think it may have been Irvin or Rice.

Hines Ward and Dion Branch are very good receivers, but not game changers...Tampa Bay's mix, well, not so great..The Ravens top actual WR was Brandon Stokely that year...

And then we have the Rams-Holt was in his rookie year, so I hesitate to put the great label on him for that Super Bowl...Would Isaac Bruce be considered great?

Denver x2: McCaffery and Smith--again, very good, but not elite

GB: Freeman and Brooks--a more talented version of Pinkston and Thrash?

Any thoughts?

Rod Smith is the closest up there in all-time numbers. Holt has that consecutive 1300 yard season thing. I'm glad you didn't bother mentioning Michael Irvin.

Maybe, but he only had 788 yards when he won the Super Bowl

Ok, so you're saying a guy that was an elite WR when he actually won it.

I think that if you're going to count Irvin as elite, then you MUST count Bruce as elite. As of right now, he has 7 1,000 yard seasons, 12,000 career yards, 77 career touchdowns. When he won it in 1999, he had 1100 yards and 12 touchdowns -- it was his 3rd 1,000 yard season of his career (and he had been injured the previous two seasons or otherwise he probably would have had 1,000 those seasons, too.) All of those stats are either equal to or better than Irvin's.

But then I have to ask, why not count Hines Ward? If I had to take a WR on my team right now (regardless of age, attitude, etc. but basing it on past success and the chance of him having future success), I'd probably rank:

Randy Moss, Marvin Harrison, Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson, Hines Ward. This probably slights a few guys like Holt, Steve Smith, Santana Moss, and the Arizona guys and some others, but I really think Hines Ward is a top 5 WR. And Top 5 means elite to me.

You gotta give a not to Ward and then Holt/Bruce. Ike Bruce was the only thing the Rams had for the early 90s.

If you looking for someone that was elite.....then went to the SB it would be Rison.

Brooks was out fairly early in the year (96) wasnt he?

I think he was on GB's practice squad in 96.

I would say Bruce.

He's a more elite receiver than Irvin.

I would rank Andre Rison above Irvin any day of the week also. He didn't have a great year in 96, but he was a top 5 guy in any given year from 90-94.

Irvin never was, just the best receiver on a running team.

Of course they are both embarassments.

So it's probably between Bruce and Smith. R.Smith has 1000 yard seasons 8 out of the past 9, starting with 1997. Bruce's totals are more sporadic -- huge numbers one year, average the next.

I wouldn't say new england has elite WR's, but they had some VERY solid guys.

When I think "elite WR" I think of guys with speed (or can get good separation) and hands. steve smith, chad johnson, TO (when he's not a dick), marvin h, a few years ago, I.Bruce, rod smith (yea, i put him with the elites, sue me), maybe even Larry F.

When I think "solid WR" I think of guys who are smart and have good hands. Here's your ed mccaffrey, d.branch, troy smith, d.givens, a.boldin, moulds, moose (not so much last year in chicago but over his career).

In my mind, there's not all that much difference between elite and solid as to who i'd rather have on my team. Of course you want a steve smith or chad johnson on your team, but would you trade cincy's wr corp for NE's a few years ago? carolina's for NE's? Probably not.

The argument can be made that a group of very solid guys is more beneficial than one hot shot and a few scrubs, both in terms of overall production and salary cap status.

I still maintain that Hines Ward is an elite WR.

I dunno if this is response to my post, but I simply forgot Hines ward.

Although, I don't think I'd classify him as elite. I'd classify him as very solid. And, as my post explained, that's not a bad thing at all.

That's kinda what I was looking at...Ward is a fantastic player, but he's not "elite" at his position, looking beyond the numbers, he's not a guy a defensive coordinator looks at and will focus his gameplan at stopping. Before this season, he rarely recieved double coverage, and I'm thinking he'll go back to enjoying that perk this year...

Sorry, Mofo--the dropsies have been a problem for Moose his whole career.

But he's still up there as far as a solid wr.

Do you follow me around to pick apart my posts?

Mario Williams sucks.
