Hi there ,
I just was wondering if any of you could help me in my search about a certain topic ,. I tried to google it many times but I didn't get the answers I was looking for
It's about the speed of the earth ... I am trying to find out the speed of the rotation of the Earth about its axis and if it used to be faster in the past
Is the speed of the earth today the same as it was millions of years before ? or it used to be faster ??
It's really an important topic , and I really need your help here ...If any one knows something about this issue then please say it . If you don't then thank you any way
Salaam

Here is what I found. If you look further down there are related questions that might help. From what I have read the earth as probably been spinning at it's current speed since it was created. Hope this helps.

If you don't mind me asking what is this about?

many things influence the speed of the earths rotation...
for example during the ice ages the oceans were smaller (ice caps were bigger) so the earth was "thinner" and spun faster (like an ice-skater that folds his arms to spin faster as they said on one of the websites above...
compacting of land due to earthquakes and such also slows down the rotation...for example the indonesian tsunami/earthquake slowed the earths rotation down for 3 milliseconds/day...
the earth spins like a bi-pole magnet it has a inner core and and outer and both spin...the speed of rotation of the inner core is definitely getting slower and will one day stop rotating...it is unclear how the outer core reacts the speed seems to fluctuate up and down and so does earths tilt and magnetic charge...
the moon has a stong effect on this too because its gravitational pull and position already influence the tides... and the speed of the moons rotation around the world is slowing down too...
the main factor that prevents us from knowing the facts is the earths shifting magnetic field...during this shift MASSIVE earthquakes and tsunamis supposedly change the speed and tilt of our egg shape planet...

It helped alot , Thanks kawasaki1
And also , I'd like to hear your personal opinion about that ,. Do you think it could be true that the speed of the earth used to be faster millions of years ago ??

Hi MR pdogg7
Thank you so much for the help . Actually I've found in the link you gave me an answer to this Question ( And it's an answer that is different to your opinion :) ) ..The answer shows that the speed of the earth today is actually different to what it used to be in the past
Here's the explanation
http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/question.php?number=700
About your question . I just want to know about this topic for 3 reasons ( curiosity - scientific motive - religious motive )
1- curiosity , as I'm interested in reading about such things and many other different fields
2- It's a serious issue .(scientific motive ). Just imagine that this theory is true , then imagine what this could mean ,..
3- There is also a religious side in it

Thanks alot pete999 ,... I really enjoyed reading your explanation , .
You seem to know alot about this issue .
I do agree with you that the speed of the earth is changing from what it used to be , And I believe the changing of its speed happens systematiclly , ..In another words It's not random but it happens in a specific time with a reason
I'm not sure if it can be measured .. I mean , can we measure how much the earth lose of it's speed in each 1000 years for example ?? . . could you explain this part more ?? and could you tell me your source ,please ???

the orbit of the moon around the earth is measured and proved beyond a doubt to be slowing down...high and low tides used to be more frequent in the past (billions of years ago)...
as for how measurements are done to establish how fast the earth used to spin and how fast it is now this is done by measuring current changes in the 5-10 year periods and then they "forecast" a speed for the future and past to the best of their scientific knowledge...
as for how minute changes in rotation are measured if this was your question they do this by bouncing some sort of ray (laser/radio/microwave) off some distant planet and measuring/calculating the rebound...for more precise measurements a "triangle" is done where its bounced off 2 "sources" to increase the path of the signal and to allow for a more precise figure...

Hi pete999
This is really useful information .Thank you so much
So , we can say without doubt that all the changes in the speed of the earth would cause earth to stop from moving some day , right ??
And if this is going to happen , then can we assume that this is gonna be the end of life on earth or the earth could start moving again in the other direction maybe ??
I know my questions sounds so funny , but we're talking here about scientific facts ,and I believe it's an important questions that need to be answered . So ,just cope with me :o
And I appreciate if you told me your source , please
Thanks again

Hey pete999
It's just that you didn't answer my questions and I've been waiting for your reply
Any way , Thank you for the help you gave me so far , :)
God bless you
