Default Printing it large, help me with the finish please :D
I'm printing this photo soon:

I've posted it before already, but recently given a good opportunity to print it 135*90 cm.

So, what you see is what I've done to it so far, and wanted to ask you, viewers, how does it look to your trained eyes and what would you add/change to it?

Also, what framing do you think would be best to suit the image, considering I've added these borders in the photo etc..?

Thanks!

I would frame it in a thin aluminium frame with clear glass. The alu frame just barely covers the edges, but why did you create a shadow line on the left and bottom side of the poster?

I would print it on silk paper, ~ 250 grams (gr/mē).

(but I don't know what your initial idea is where you will print it on?)

I thought the shadows looked nice, do you think I should remove it?

I'll find out if they have silk paper.
I just happened to come across someone who has a printing company so...

Thanks Dutchforce!

I am an offsetprinter in the 1020x720mm market on a 5 color Komori press. I print alot of posters, but they are reproductions with reasonable amounts (usually starting from around 1000 prints).

We have a customer who sells posters, and my taste is that silk paper is less glossy, so that it is also nice to view at with not so much shinyness... Perhaps it is wise to see examples between gloss paper and silk paper, by just have it print on a smaller scale, so you can decide what looks better!

Think that silk print would look good with alu frame around it barely covering the edges of this poster. Thus making a shadow border obsolete... Else you don't need a frame, do you ?

A matt alu would def be the choice over gloss aluminium.

My 2 cents.. btw.. very nice poster (or picture haha)!!

Thanks Dutch,

An alu frame does sound like a lovely idea generally, although I've searched for it in google images and seen many types, what kind did you think of? And it should be a matt one I totally agree...

I didn't understand exactly what you meant by:
frame around it barely covering the edges of this poster.
Could you please show me a reference?

So you say I should lose the shadow border or the whole white border, both the internal and the external(I left some white around the photo) borders?

nice picture but:

- i would remove the frames and the "the alps" and use original picture.

I think the picture is much better without them.

Thanks Zildjian,
it looks like both text and borders/frames are out now...

Haha I've also posted the same on DPR forums and been told I should crop the bottom third out, because it's just a huge empty piece of snow.

I'll post the updated variations soon, thanks guys!

something like this: the edges of your picture will be behind the alu strips.. thus shadow lines are covered and not seen..

So shouldn't I print it that way so the edges won't be hidden? Like adding canvas size around the photo itself? Or do we strictly not want any white borders since they might be ugly? [shocked]

Frame adds 3D look to pic so additional shadows (add another 3D effect) would look weird to me..

I would say definitely remove the text and border, it looks amateurish and the pic itself is great.

Don't crop the bottom 3rd off, but do take about 1/8 of the bottom.

Basically you want the vertical space marked out in the top right to be the same height as the vertical space marked out in the bottom left (height of the foreground snow).

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks erikl85, so it looks like the text really has to go...

I think I see what you mean, like, make the main diagonal line in the photo more centered?
On it.

Thanks

Yup. Its not a big crop required, but imo it make the composition sit much better.

Brightened up the mountains on the top left half, they were really.... Grey.

So just a frame now eh? [thumbup]

EDIT: DragomirC that's awesome thanks! Does look like it might be too much with the borders and all, combined with a real frame...

A little bit of local contrast enhancement to make the shadows "pop".

In Photoshop the settings I used are:

Unsharp Mask
Amount: 7%
Radius: 50 pixels
Threshold: 0 levels

Any more on the amount, and it looks "overdone" imo.

What should the parameters be if I'm working with a 7776*4632 file?
It makes sense to think the Radius should be just proportional, but let's make sure.

edit: my calculator said it needs 555pix Radius but Photoshop can't do anymore than 250

I usually use radius 50 for local contrast enhancement no matter what resolution the file is - it seems to work just fine. Sometimes the amount needs to be increased, but it all depends on the content of the image.
