Default Where to start with 3d modelling?
Hey,
Going to do a project next year at university which will involve a 3d modelling element, and basically my tutor has told me to get familiar with 3ds max or Maya.

Well i have downloaded the 3DS Max 30 day trial, and was wondering if people could point me in the direction of resources to look at for absolute beginners, books, internet, dvd's etc

thanks for the help, Paul

I always dreamed of doing some 3d work, atm i miss the patience and yet i have plenty of time and nothing to do.

You can just use google to search for tutorials i'll bet even youtube has a few.

Arent there any free versions?

Probably the best place I like for tutorials is 3D Buzz:

The first part of their tutorials are free:
http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/sv_video.php?v=309

If you want to go farther a whole package can be bought:
http://www.3dbuzz.com/xcart/product.php?productid=38

These are all video tutorials btw.

in the past i've used a programcalled wings3d for modelling, it's mainly for low poly sub-division modelling (none of the complicated NURBS etc that you'll find in 3dsMAX) but it's free and easy to learn with.

Yea, they had problems with ppl torrenting their videos so all of them have to be copy-protected now.

These tutorial are basically their actual classes at the University they are professors at though, so they are worth it.

Different kind of copy-protection

This one works a little better they actually watermark you name and address to your copy of the videos. Torrent it and they know where you live .

You can move and copy it off the disc to where ever you actually want as many times as you want, so technically there is no traditional copy-protections.

I think its a brilliant way to keep ppl a little more honest but allow the customer complete freedom with their copy.

Yea, its absolutely overwhelming at first. Once you get over that initial learning curve its great though.

3D Studio Max was my first 3d modeling program also. The amount of flexibility in such a program is mind-blowing.
