Default Best ever live album?
I know many people aren't particularly fond of live albums, but I love them.

My favourite would have to be Iron Maiden - Live After Death. I first heard it 18 years ago, but I'm not even close to being bored of it.

So, what's your favourite ever live album?

I don't care what they say about Garth ******** Brooks. It's the only live album to get.

Oooh, I like all live albums (of bands I like anyway!) Nothing beats hearing a track performed live, there is always so much more energy behind it. With the production values stripped away the music becomes a lot more raw and real. Even the bum notes the guitarists hit just form part of a new tapestry.

I couldn't pick a favourite though sorry. I enjoy all my Live albums.

I'd have to say from all the live music I have heard.

Though that isn't very much since every time I listen to something live with most bands it's like nails on a chalkboard. Very very few bands out there can perform live. So usually I just all out avoid it.

It's Kick Out The Jams by MC5 isn't it?

Some say that it's Bob Dylan's Royal Albert Hall Concert for obvious reasons and I'd tend to agree.

I love and hate live albums due to the fact that bands can either totally **** up live and expose all their weaknesses or totally reinvent the record. There are bands who have average albums but played live they totally change it's aesthetic and it becomes a good album.

One example of that would be A place to bury strangers (eponymous).

As for my favourite, I can't really choose.

Band Of Gypsys by hendrix is nice, bowie's stage or the ziggy stardust movie album rock, The Song Remains The Same is pretty decent (zep), the beatles get back is pretty damn good and is 99% live (rooftop concert!).

I don't know about my ultimate favourite, but the audio rip of the "Enslaved-Return to Yggdrasill/Live in Bergen" DVD is balls-to-the-wall black/prog metal and sounds incredible.

I recently saw Enslaved at Hellfest in France, but hadn't heard them up until then. Very impressive they were. I was hoping to pick up a couple of albums, but so far I've only heard Isa.

Yep. It's not really a live album as such, just a collection of a few random live tracks and rarities/unreleased tracks, plus a DVD of their promo videos from Undertow and Aenima.

Fully agreed! The only thing is that my girlfriend listens to that album so damned much I'm almost getting tired of it. But who am I to complain, I'd rather listen to that album non stop than some of the other **** she listens to like Matchbox 20, Train, and the Googoo Dolls.

They're really easy to get into because the music is so effortlessly well structured, catchy and epic, but they've taken on prog influences and it's also incredibly weird having a black metal band with a stadium rock-esque feel that actually doesn't sound contrived. They polarized their fanbase after they started experimenting but I much prefer the post-Monumention work.

Below the Lights is the best as it contains “As Fire swept clean the Earth”: one of the finest songs of the 00’s.

Before I went through all the replies, I expected that to be the most common response.
Guess we're just getting too old?

Short List in no particular order:
  • Peter Frampton - Frampton comes Alive
  • Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys
  • Nirvana - Unplugged
  • Tool - Salival (Extended Pushit is amazing)
