Default Looking to buy a DSLR - Help?
Alright so I think the time has come for me to finally pick up a DSLR. I've have limited experience when it comes to photography - I do take good pictures - but I'm no pro.

I really like commercial photographers like Jill Greenberg (www.manipulator.com) and Dave Hill (http://www.davehillphoto.com) ...So eventually I would like to get some lights...I've been working on (in photoshop) my own technique that is influenced by the two but it's definetly not exact...

Anyways - If some of you guys could suggest a camera / where to buy it from that would be awesome - I haven't really found one that I'm like MAN I HAVE TO GET THAT yet so that's why I'm posting. My budget is a little low, about $500-$800 so yeah, nothing super fancy.

Anyone?

I'm thinking about ordering one this weekend. Seems like the Canon Rebel XTI is pretty popular.

For that money I'd get a pentax k100d (or the k100d super if you can wait a bit) and a sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4.5 lens.

Pentax K100D or Nikon D40 is the general consensus. Haven't used the k100d but I'm in the market for an SLR of a similar type. I'm liking the shake reduction features in the k100d.

I agree with the K100D, but not the D40. Instead, i will of course, recommend the Sony Alpha.. [thumbup]

My budget may be a little higher than expected - what do you guys think of the Nikon D80?

Haha never-mind. It was $800 for body only.

Hmm maybe I should have posted this before. But I'm a Graphic Designer/Artist - so a lot of the pictures I take, will be for like composites, matte paintings...etc

So I guess the BEST camera in my budget ($800 max - MAYBe $850-$900) with the highest res / megapixels.

Wow newegg has a pretty good combo going for the rebel XTI

Unless you are really set on that one, this is a much better deal:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Penta...oductDetail.do

Camera - Black
PEN K100KIT1855

Price was:

$699.99
You save:

-$156.00
You pay:

$543.99
Mail-in rebate(s):

-$50.00
Price after rebate(s): $493.99

Aslo keep in mind, that sheer megapixels is not everything. Unless you increase the size of the sensor, a sensor with higher MP will also be more noisy. The 6MP sensors currently out there, are very mature, and give very nice images.

Don't forget that the 6mp sensor is good up to A3 printings. If you need more mp the pentax k10d is IMO a better buy than the d80.

Though I still think the k100d with the sigma 17-70 F/2.8-4.5 is you best bet. No need to spend more money on something else.

I had the opportunity to use the Sony Alpha a while back, and after using a lot of Nikon D and Canon EOS D cameras all I can say is that I was disappointed. It just didn't feel right. It might technically be a decent camera but I found it very awkward to use.

IMHO for what he is asking for the Sony is by far the best camera, 10.2MP sensor, Built in Image stabalization. All within his price range. I still stand by i think for what he is looking for its best bang for the buck.

Welp. After going to a friends house who has a Canon XTi - reading reviews on cnet...etc I ordered the Canon Rebel XTI from newegg, along with the canon starter bag and a 2gb memory card (also comes with a free 1gb card).

Anyway to close the thread?
