Default Artis Zoo - Amsterdam
I had to go up to Amsterdam today to visit the British Consulate (to get some paperwork for my forthcoming marriage) - so my fiancée and I figured we'd make a day of it, and visit Amsterdam Artis Zoo in the afternoon.

All shots taken with 30D + 70-200 F/4L. Shot in RAW, and processed with Capture1 LE and Photoshop CS.

Comments about the colours / processing / sharpening etc very welcome - as I've not processed many shots so far with this current LCD.

ISO 1600 - shot through glass:

As I'd expect from you, Chris, the composition and focus are great, and I feel that the final PP leaves very little to be desired. My only crit is the slight underexposure (as I see it) of the last two images, but judging from the fact that they were shot with iso 3200, light was probably at a premium; I'd still like, however, to see them a trifle brighter. Any USM you applied to counter the shooting through the glass seems to have worked well, as the images are all crisp and clean.

Nice shooting and PP!

Yeah, the 2nd to last one was very hard to shoot, as there was not light at all. The last one was actually outside - but it was black animals against a black background - and I had to expose down to stop the bits of bread from being overexposed [rofl]

I might have a few more pics, - I'll go through the RAW files again this morning.

Here are the final few I have just processed:

One-legged bird:

A very melancholy looking goat:

Outside - and shot in servo mode, tracking the seal and waiting for it to break the surface:

I actually have that set as my windows background now. If anyone wants the 1680x1050 version, I've uploaded it here:

Thanks [thumbup]
I will tell everbody that Chris took the picture in the sun.........or that Chris in the Sun took the picture.....what ever

Like the new ones too.

With all the good pictures coming in lately, I feel tempted to buy a new camera.
I only have a Nikon Coolpix 2100........but if anyone has any advice on the use of it, please tell

I really like the first two and last shots of the new four, Chris. The first one has great bokeh and subject isolation. The goat has great sharpness in its fur, and although I question its position in the center of the frame, that aspect doesn't really bother me at all. The third shot is simply a tough exposure to get because of the backlight; I'd like to see any examples of the shot if you exposed for the bird only (just for comparative purposes). Great job tracking that seal in the last one; I'm sure those suckers move pretty quickly. [thumbup]

I agree with folville!

Overall, a really nice batch of shots, but a few of them are a bit underexposed (especially the last 2 shots in the second batch you posted). I'm looking at them at work on my design station monitor, so I'm quite confident it's not just my monitor (now, if I was using my piece of crap monitor at home, it would be a different story).

A quick levels adjustment on those two photos makes them look a lot better (can't upload from work, so you'll just have to take my word for it).[yes]

interesting that the pictures shot through glass seem to actually not be much of a hindrance to the quality, awesome stuff.

I'd just like to say i feel pretty jealous that you can shoot at ISO3200, i've not even touched the ISO on my S1 IS because at 50 it seems slightly noisey still...

Rather than making my own zoo thread, I'll just add to this one.

In town we have a pretty kickin' zoo, complete with upwards of ten animals.

Here are some prairie dogs and a goat!

[gasp!]

Anyway, I thought they were worth posting, but there are more to come.
