My son is obtaining mark 1127 in 12th state board exam. He got 190 cut off marks (maths, physics and chemistry). Caste FC. He want to study mech. engg as first choice. 2. EEE 3. ECE. Can have in 10 top colleges? Anyone can give their suggestions and above subjectwise future life?

B.Tech Mechanical Engineering is the most preferred subject at present with good scope.

With cut off 190, its too tough for a FC candidate to get through Anna University Counseling. However, he can just try. Some Brahmin students known to me had cut off between 94 and 95 and could not get through.

I would suggest to go for SASTRA University in Thanjore and make attempts to obtain admission for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering. Needless to say it would be tough and based on his luck to get what he desired due tough competition among students who all are behind B.Tech Mech. Eng. He can have an open option and choose BTech Electronics and Communication Engineering if could not get BTech Mech. Eng.

SASTRA is a well established institution with all high class infrastructure and hostel arrangements. Majority of FC students opt for SASTRA.

I don't know the cost of enrolement in an Engineering college in India. You may like to think about enrolement in overseas. It may cost would be more; but the standard would be high. But your son would have an option of earning to support himself while studying. Once a Malayalee girl was my study mate; she earned enough to pay for her tution fees and accomadation and food.... I am not saying everyone can do that.. but something to to taken into consideration.

For an FC, life is tough in T.N. even if he/she scores 99.99%. I like the suggestion from Ravi & Raghy. While the former gives Indian option, the latter overseas. In today's material world, it might be a good idea to try the latter. All the best.

I do agree with your suggestion of opting for studies Overseas.

But, there are many factors that may not be suitable/comfortable for the boy and his parents. MAY BE!!

In such a case, SASTRA is the most ideal option. Its a Brahmin Management and Brahmins got the priority. If Boy is open with options he can get on board with SASTRA where quality / standard of education is too high. Its Highly reputed institution with all most all the giant corporates taking up Campus Interview in SASTRA.

The first two days of Counseling would be ALL INDIA / Central Education basis . If the boy could cope with the competition, he may get within the two days. OR, on rest of the days that is meant for competition among the boys only from TN.

I think getting a seat in the branch of your choice is not a problem if one is prepared to go to a relatively unknown college - thousands of seats lie vacant every year. Many minority managed institutions (say - telugu) do not find enough candidates from their community (say telugu) and offer the seats for a consideration. Very unprofessional approach to admission in professional courses!

Sastra University, Thanjavur is very good education and discipline wise. It has campus
selection facility and hospital facility also. Second, now prominent of PRIST.

A recent survey has quoted that there is an absolute shortage of mechanical
engineering discipline students, specialisation with automobile, basic design of
equipments and machineries.

Thank you, Ravi and Balu sir for your info on SASTRA university. It is heartening to note that there is at least one place in T.N. where Brahmins are welcome. It is equally heartening to note that there are good prospects for the students of SASTRA.

Great SASTRA University. I have never heard about this Brahmin-managed University. How did they survive under DMK Govt.!!! anyway, it is great. I have a relative studying in Texas University under some scholarship but he also earned some amount by working evening hours.
