Yea, to have a Thai ID card, you have to be in someones house book, don't have to be family and you do not have to have a house to have a house book, I have my own book which is yellow because I am a farang immigrant, and am also registered in my wifes book, which is blue, so am registered with the thai govt as living here.
Real strange the way it works and I still do not fully understand it all, but with my own book it makes a lot of things easier.like registering a car or M.C in my name. |

Far as I know there is no such thing as a family book and I asked my wife and she has never heard of one either,, There is a house book..................... It also seems that you don't actually have to live there, since I asked the question, what if you don't have a house or what if you are an orphan. She says that it you can be entered in a relatives or a friends book. That's probably why it is also refered to as a family book. Right now she is in her families book but if we settle in Thailand then she can start her own at which point her name will be dropped from her family book. I now believe the passport things was a bit of a red herring. |

The only thing a Thai needs to get a passport is a Thai ID card, we had to get one for our daughter before we could get her passport. |
