Has a decision been made to go with a top 5 in 2012 as previously proposed WAFLHQ? From memory it was going to be put to a vote by the 9 WAFL clubs. I think it would be a good thing giving clubs and supporters more interest deeper into the season. I know it is unlikely a side that finishes 5th will ever win a flag or even make a GF from there but it gives them finals experience that might help them the following year.

I hope it doesnt come in.
I didnt like it back it the 90's(in an 8 team comp) when it was introduced albeit for a short time and thankfully common sense prevailed back then and hopefully it will again. It doesnt make any sense to me to have more than half the competition play finals for what maybe an extra week of footy and perhaps a couple of thousand people or less? Just 1 scenerio to look at also..imagine if your club finished top of the ladder in a final 5 comp and you just happened to have a bye last game of the season..you wouldnt play the next week either because 4th V 5th and 2nd V 3rd,thats 2 weeks in a row of non footy you then have to front up for the second semi, win that and you get another bye the following week. Thats 1 game of footy you play in a month and then you have the GF the most important game of the year..dont reckon any coach or supporter would like that scenerio, for mine not the ideal preperation for the top team of the comp going into a GF. It may not happen often but it could happen. |

30plus we will agree to disagree on this one. There are always going to be scenarios that are going to pop up. The top side could play a game against one of the Eagles or Dockers reserves sides. You look at the Rugby Union comp (not sure what they call it). I think they have about 12 or more sides but only a top four. I think that takes a lot of interest out of their competition. There wouldn't be much between 4th and 5th anyway. I reckon if we had made the four (or 5) last year we could have progressed to the prelim final. We played our best footy in the last month of the season.

sun ra not the same demographics available in any of those areas to put a league/reserve/colts as required in the WAFL comp in cities with of just over 30 - 40 thousand people available (Bunbury being the exception) and no heavy industry available for employment opportunities accept in Kal & Gero to attract & keep talent from both local and other players through recruitment. Peel has long suffered from this issue. This would also dilute the talent available to current WAFL clubs who expend an enormous amount of money and time developing these country areas. So that is a no to expand the comp to 10 teams.
