slammed into his knees going for the ball, the same as forwards crash into backmen going for the mark, the same as others crash into packs to split them open.

quote - he had a 20 metre run up and slammed straight into graham's knee "but he was going for the ball". wtf
its only because graham was hurt that you term it reckless, if he was okay you wouldn't think twice. it'd be two players having a dip.
the same as any other game of footy, there must be lots of reckless endeavours.
There is the answer in the examples you gave above. Forwards crashing into backmen and players splitting packs open isn't the same as chopping a players legs in half.

i've spoken to a few footy people since the incident (including bullies supporters) and not one has said hughes was reckless d/d.
you're on your own with this one.
They were probably at the game, i probably got a lot better view of it on tv and replays show it from a couple of angles. I was also there and had a good view of the Barlow/Palmer incident and that was unfortunate in that Palmer tried to pull out of the marking contest at the last second and decided to go to ground. I can't remember how the Nathan Brown incident happened about 5 years ago but I believe we are seeing too many bad injuries like this one yesterday and it needs to be looked at.

This was an unfortunate incident but it's part of footy. If you make a rule against players diving for the ball like Hughes did then the game will become a farce and hard ball gets will be a thing of the past.

I'm just curious how many people who are commenting here have seen footage of the incident?

Robbo there is a big difference between diving for the ball in a pack when the ball is a couple of metres away and sprinting in from 20m away and diving into an opponents legs in a one on one. The difference is the impact and diving or scrambling for the ball from close in i would consider fair play where as diving in or sliding in low from more than say 5m away i would say is unnecessary and dangerous and the proof is there for all to see.

There are plenty of rule changes that are controversial and take some adjusting too. Karl Langdon is calling for the umps to blow the whistle on players that duck the head to earn a free kick. The reason it is happening is because the AFL have made protection of the head a priority and rightly so but now that rule is being exploited.

Demons den, are you for real? Yes I was there and saw the incident(about ten metres away) and also watched the incident on TV, it was simply a football accident, so get a life and stop talking rubbish on this unfortunate accident.

Serious injuries are just a part of our game I'm afraid. It's a contact sport after all and players know the risks associated with playing it.

As I previously stated, it was a terrible incident, with two guys going for the ball and if people like you and a few others are looking at this incident as 'illegal', we might as well go and watch bloody basketball! If the ball wasn't there that's different, but a guy diving on the ball is a basic part of our game and sadly serious injuries sometime happen. I feel sick watching the incident too, but tunnel vision and narrow mindedness is spoiling our great game. Let's get over it and wish Jamie Graham all the very best for a good recovery.

You don't need to point it out. Injuries like that happen from time to time it's a contact sport get over it.

I get the feeling you are hoping it does happen to a WP player.

you must be seriously warped robbo...we all know you act like a bit of a kn?b from time to time, but you can’t possibly think after what happened to Graham, any SF person would wish that on another player??? surely not...

Do you disagree that these injuries are part of football? You seem to disagree with my comments.

I'm struggling to understand why you would feel the need to mention anything about this type of injury happening to a WP player this weekend.

if it were to happen to any player this w/e whether it be a WP, CL ammos side or whoever, it would be a very unfortunate part of football...
