Greetings
In the Apnapanasati Sutta the Buddha teaches that Mindfulness with Breathing will lead to the fulfillment of the four foundations of mindfulness. However I was wondering, even if Mindfulness with Breathing does fulfill them, do we still practice the four foundations of mindfulness constantly and only develop them in full when we practice Anapanasati? |

I practice them constantly, because I have a long history of intense dukkha arising in me through failure to do so. For me it is about guarding the doors of the six senses. I have found that constant mindfulness has led to a huge reduction in the arising of dukkha. Also, practice makes the "guardian" more effective. Remembering Mad-Eye Moody from Harry Potter has helped me: "Constant vigilance!"

My view is Mindfulness with Breathing will lead to the fulfillment of the four foundations of mindfulness, i.e., their perfection.
The Anapanasati Sutta is about more subtle and more advanced than the Satipatthana Sutta. The Anapanasati Sutta is based on more subtle & profound awareness of the Satipatthana occurring via samma samadhi. Kind regards ![]() |
