dunno, i have not been to an american cinema. in poland cinemas are fairly clean, there is no strong tradition of food consumption when watching movies. when i was a child there was no food on sale in cinemas at all.

I love the movies and go quite a lot and have NEVER had the sort of experience that LJ talks of //. the audiences were always very quiet and respectful . and this was even at Men in Black in 3 d or Avatar /// although (I am sorry, this is a Spanish keyboard and my little net book is on the fritz and I do not know where half the damn punctuation marks are )

I do tend to only go out for the more intellectual movies and not Freddy Krugers. But for SOME movies, like Pirates of the Caribbean, I would EXpect the audience to participate a bit, no?

But Dominicans do make a noise, that is true.

most of the time, i like the tune

and i know that you do too, but clearly what with the in laws and the baby shower and the christmas thing all piling up and yes! another kid on the way

YOU NEED A HUG

here, here is a hug, laurajean

its gonna be ok!

If forced to describe the DR in one word, I'd answer: LOUD!!!

My own favorite is when you get a phone call or about to make one, the volume of talking seems to go up.

i prefer to describe it in two words...TOO LOUD. i hope that i do not receive a lashing from Chip on this one, since he excoriated me before, reminding me that ,culturally, Dominicans do not value quietude, and i should learn to understand that.

On a similar note to my previous thread, I would like to comment on my night out to the Cinema last night.

I havent been to the Cinema for a loooong time and when I did it was empty day time showing of the Lion King with my daughter, last night my husband and I made time for date night and went to see Prometheus in 3D. The evening was ruined (for me) by the constant shouting out loud and full blown conversation throughout the bloody film. I asked my husband if it was annoying him and he didnt have a clue what i was talking about lol.

We spoke about it after and he said "Its just people having a good time, they are just living their lives"

I didnt say that he was right or wrong, I just explained that whatever I do I automatically take other people into consideration. I didnt go out tonight to listen to them screaming in my ear with their stupid comments all night.

I just think the world would be a very uncomfortable place if we all just walked round doing exactly what we pleased with zero consideration for anyone or anything, but then Im not exactly a rule breaker and am not very "fly by the seat of my pants kinda gal"

I dont think I am much different to many ex-pats, but are we just up-tight or is this type of behavior wrong.

Thoughts please.
This is why I don't go to the movies when in the DR. Last time I went it was to see one of the harry potter movies (the one where the snake was first featured) coincidentally a merengue song talking about a snake was a big hit at the time and every time the snake would make an appearance this broad behind me would start singing "una culebra papi una culebra" I walked out after the third time she did it. I was f'in ****ed! No respect!!!

Does supermarket here have proper sausages that I used to love? Like Nathan's or Sabrett branded sausage? Hack I will even settle for Hebrew's or Ball Park. I went to Nacional and last time they did not have any...

believe it or not when i was in SD last week i saw nathan's hot dog shop. i do not know if it's just the name or the brand itself. on churchill street, maybe 200 meters from metro.
not that i know nathan's, having never been to the states. here on the north coast i buy a variety of german sausages. but i always look for nathan's out of curiosity in pricesamrt, i remember someone once said they sell it. they did not, so far.

Nathan's is possibly the best hot dog in the world. Certainly the best you can ever get here. Pola in Bavaro has them once in awhile. Last time I bought 21 packages of 8 and shoved them in my freezer. I would have bought more, but that is all they had. I am still eating them on the grill months later.

This replaced Badpiece's job to bring Nathan's from NY. Now I don't bother him anymore.

21 packages, whoa! When I was a little girl, my dad used to pile us in the car and drive to Coney Island just to get Nathan's hot dogs. I remember how happy he was the first time Mom found them in a store. I still buy them.

Last week I drove to Long Island for a funeral with my daughter and 6 yr old grandson, and as we approached Coney Island we had a whole conversation about when grandma [me] was a little girl, Steeplechase Pier, the Cyclone, the Parachute Jump, and NATHANS! The little guy was duly impressed, ha ha!

Gosh, you'd think a buyer for the supermarket would look at how fast they sold, and buy more.

I have to admit, Jumbo and National have done a fairly good job of keeping Root Beer, Mountain Dew, and Dr. Pepper on their shelves since I did my monster email campaign.

I even got them to stock Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches!!! I wonder how often they bring a frozen food trailer from the states?

Hebrew National would be my second choice. But you have to boil those. Nathan's is best grilled.
