And a very good and incredible news; although the towns of Iloca and Duao were devastated by two huge waves of the tsunami the official report is that no one is dead or missing in those towns. Evacuation messures worked perfectly!
Even the tigers, lyons and monkeys of a circus in Duao were evacuated.
Duao and Iloca doesnt exist anymore as towns, but all of the people are alive and with no serious injuries. A happy news among all the sadness.
Man, Chile has got their **** together.

Chile has shown me a lot through this tragedy. Your country initially said, "We can handle it. Nobody do anything yet". Now, they acknowledge that they can use a little help, but you're pulling yourselves up. Taking what you need and no more. I read that the grocery stores have been opened to hand out food and that water is being dispersed.
Good job.

That last photo is excellent.

Dude, 8.8 is some serious ****. Thank goodness Chile has its act together.

I'm really glad you & yours are ok, CP.

Destruction is also big in the region north of Talca. Santa Cruz, where I lived for half a year, destroyed, surfer beach of Pichilemu and other coastal towns hit by the tsunami, apparently dozens missing, several friends homeless.

This is big ****. Aguanten!

Oh no, the pictures from Viña del Mar and Valparaíso are mine. The one of the man with the flag in Pelluhue and the last ones are from TVN News Channel and El Mercurio Newspaper. I apologize if I wasn't clear on that.

Those are Mowag units, from the Viña del Mar division of the Marines. As far as my limited military knowledge, they are similar to the Strykers.

EDIT: Mowag Famae, a local version with modifications of the regular Mowag.

You "guess" correctly and it becomes a "prediction". This is how we get religious people.

Check it out. This is big.

Chile quake may have shifted Earth's axis

The 8.8 temblor likely changed the entire planet's rotation and made our days shorter, a NASA expert says.

Can someone better at physics than I explain how this works given conservation of angular momentum?

Momentum != velocity

The mass distribution of the earth changes, and thus, to keep angular momentum constant, rotation speed changes.

It's like an ice skater spinning... slowing down when it extends its arms, and speeding up when it tucks its arms close to the body. angular momentum is maintained, but the different mass distribution means a different rotational speed.

I don't understand how the axis, or angle, of rotation changes the length of a rotation.

Whether the Earth is like this "/" or like this "|" seems to make little difference in my understanding.

The first reports I saw said it changed the axis of rotation and thus speed, was that incorrect? Or is that another affect which does not effect the rotation speed?

Yeah, external force.

Ecofarm: I don't know much about rigid body physics, much less an actual planet, but a spinning object in (near) equilibrium will have both it's tilt and rotational speed affected if you reshuffle its mass around. AFAIK, they are both consequences of the mass reshuffling.

Where is KH when you need him to call you a moron and explain stuff?

The skater transforms stored chemical energy to do work, the earth releases whatever energy was built up in the fault/crust around it (elastic potential energy I guess), which was built up from plate movement, which is a consequence of mantle convection, which is a consequence of stored heat energy radiating out. Where this energy came from isn't really relevant WRT the conservation of momentum (but AFAIK, the sun and the moon don't exert torque on the earth) just as it isn't really relevant where the skater had lunch.
