Default Anyone know anything about Jewlery? want white gold/diamond/opal earrings
Trying to find some Opal earrings for my girl. White gold with some diamond enhancements would be nice too. The only problem is, I don't know anything about this stuff. I want something that looks like it cost $1000, but actually only cost about $100-$200.

I was looking online, but it just seems there's no way of knowing what you're really going to get get. Like, what do the stones really look like? How big is it? Do the opals look deep and iridescent or are they bland and milky white?

Anyone have any tips on jewelry shopping? I really have no idea where to start or what to look for or how any ratings work.

Or should I go with pearls?

My girl's, sister's boyfriend/husband dude is getting her diamond earrings. I don't want to also get diamond earrings for my girl because I don't want them to be cheaper looking, just in case. Also, they're getting married, and we're not even past 2nd base... sooo, I think diamond studs aren't appropriate.

What do you think? Probably not the right place to ask a bunch of dudes about jewelry for chicks.

Don't get her "crappier" earrings, get her something completely different if you feel you need to get something. ie not earrings at all.

Get her a pandora bracelet. you can get started with just the bracelet, 2 clamp charms, and then one more charm for whatever occasion it is. She will love it because all women like pandora bracelets and they can get charms from everyone for whatever little thing they want. you will like it because if you stay together, and you dont know what to get her later. just get another charm

regular sterling silver ones are $25 - but you can get fancy ones with gold and gems for over $300

dont get her diamonds until after you have put your weiner inside her

an opal should be more iridescent and the pearls will be milky white but still have that funny sheen.

for being early in a relationship you dont want something too fancy too soon, whereas the bracelet you were thinking her family and friends would enjoy getting her charms for it too. i guarantee she will like it

1. Don't even try.

There are $1000 earrings that look like they cost $100, but that's because they're crap. So you can buy something good that costs $100 that looks like something atrocious that costs $1000... but as an objective aesthetic judgment, only taking into account well-made jewelry, there is no such thing as miracles. $100 will look like $50-200, and $1000 will look like $500-$2000.

My fiance is an appraiser (boy is it tough to shop for her), and even though she specializes in art rather than jewelry, she can usually guess the price of anything to within 20%.

On the other hand, why don't you phrase your request differently.

Instead of saying "i want to buy something that costs $100 that looks like $1000", say "My budget is $100, and I'd like to buy something pretty and tasteful that she will like.

I was looking online, but it just seems there's no way of knowing what you're really going to get get. Like, what do the stones really look like? How big is it? Do the opals look deep and iridescent or are they bland and milky white?

Don't shop at retailers / department store chains... unless you know what you're looking for you will get screwed on BOTH price and quality. If you know what you're looking for, you'll still get screwed on the price, and frequently they simply don't have anything nice available.

BlueNile.com is a great place to shop online for moderate/slightly expensive jewelry. That's where I bought my engagement ring and it was easy and the price was fair for what I got.

You can get very decent Opal/Diamond/White gold studs for about $250

... and they tell you the exact characteristics of the stones.

I kinda liked these. Only problem is, I don't know what the opals look like in person.

They're nice, not too over-the-top, diamonds, opals, silver and gold and there are matching necklaces.

[edit] Saw these at Macy's and didn't like them.

Actually... I'm not so sure now. I do like these too.

Do yourself a favor. Don't shop at Macy's for jewelry. You can shop at upmarket retailers (such as Fortunoff) but you'll pay about 50%-100% more... but will at least get some semblance of quality.

Macy's has horrible jewelry (too large, and lacking any finesse) with terrible stones. Certainly don't shop there online. Even the product photos they have are unprofessional-looking.

If you don't know how opals look in person, go somewhere upmarket and look. Ask for something around $1000-2000.

I suppose your gf told you she likes opals? Where did you get the idea?

Personally I don't like Opal. Looks dirty to me. Tanzanite and (for much more money) sapphire are much nicer-looking blue stones.

I like the Opals. Also, opals come in so many variations. The clear, deep colors of an opal I like. The murky white ones I don't. The opals I like aren't blue. They're not white either.

I just got back from about 6 different jewelry stores and didn't find anything. It's all a scam. The price tag on one set was $750 and the guy was like, I'll sell them to you for $250. Yeah right. I'll go stick a $5k price tag on my computer and sell it to you fur just $1k. Want to buy?

Ugh... I just don't know what I want. All I know is, a charm bracelet I don't like.

Went to the jewlery stores today and that was crazy. All the best stuff cost more than I'm willing to spend. Don't know her that well. Going to have to think of a new Christmas give idea.
