You could try vegetables? Cucumber ones are usually easy to make.

How do you prepare your rice? Last time I made mine, I think I forgot to add some rice vinegar to it and it tasted reaaaaally bland.

Rice vinegar? Ha, I always use it on my salads, never actually thought it was for rice.

I'll have to try it, I've never tried making any kind of Japanese cooking(sushi), I always go out.

Yeah I was suppose to put rice vinegar whilst the rice was cooking. When I gave it to my friend after making them she said "you didn't put rice vinegar in this did you?" and I was like "er...no" and she responded with "no wonder it's not got much taste to it"[oops]

I wouldnt use supermarket grade fish to make sushi. I would find a fish market that sells "sushi grade" fish to avoid possibly getting sick or even worse worms.

i dont make them with raw fish, only simple stuff that i know is safe, tinned tuna/smoked salmon etc.
not as nice, but the sushi i made i thought was delicious.
i cant find rice vinegar at the supermarket, where abouts it it? with all the other vinegars?
i enjoyed the rice even tho it was fairly bland

You can usually find it in your local oriental market? Or it may be located in the World Food section in your supermarket.

Mirin?

All I know is rice vinegar is sorta like normal vinegar but I don't think it's as strong. You only need like 1-2 table spoons of the vinegar when you're cooking the rice.

i made another load yesterday, 5-6 maki sushi pieces of each of these:
tinned tuna
smoked salmon
mackeral
crab meat

and then 6 smoked salmon nigiri which i love.

i found this site last night http://www.sushi-guide.co.uk/index.htm
im gonna try making it with fresh raw tuna and salmon next week, im just worried about the risks of eating it raw.
i can either buy the frozen and thawed stuff from the fish counter at work (tesco) or the chilled stuff from the fish section of the chillers.
which would be better?
im worried i may get sick.
theres no fish markets or anywhere better near me btw.
also, does anyone know how long its safe to keep freshly made sushi in the fridge for? i only make it for myself so i tend to make alot

try chicken (cooked obviously) with some teriyaki sauce and cucumber. Works well in sushi rolls and tastes great.

Define "normal" food.
