It\'s pretty difficult for me to even care about Microsoft\'s problems any more. Even a distributor like me
can\'t get decent suppport for what amounts to an overpriced product. The last three servers we set up were Linux; they went up with half the work and have been rock solid. Maybe that\'s why it\'s gaining market share so fast in the server realm. Several of my largest clients are considering Linux for their desktops for the coming year and I don\'t blame them just on a simple cost of ownership evaluation. |
Yeah I
heard about the comments they placed in there.....very funny, and true. |
Quote:<font br / br / class=\"post\"> That\'s good to know, thanks. I\'m pretty sure that my computer (just got a new one last week) is set up to do that automatically, but now I\'ll be making sure that it does. |
So
what does this mean in laymans terms? Does it give hackers an extra advantage.... or just allowing competitors to see how their programing is put together? Just curiosity from someone who can use a computer, but has no idea what makes it work |
It
seems like they are making a big deal about very little. From what I hear it is not a significant amount of code nor is it related to any portion of great importance. It may be that they are making it sound like a big deal to put pressure on the person who leaked it or to prevent it happening again. |
Quote:<font class=\"post\"> I dont know what hackers will do. But we, simple mortals, can laugh a lot reading the commentaries in the code source. what I
read at slashdot that is one file with 205MB. Maybe it is 15% of total code. . Some files like \"core dump.dll\" (Kernel???) is affected. Some specialists think that the code leaked from company called \"MainSoft\" (Some microsoft partner) but which the size of the impact? it is a difficult answer. |
Windows NT/2000 Source Code
Well
Well, The source code of Windows NT and Windows 2000 is available in the internet undergroud. (only now???? humm.. doubts) check out Microsoft Article here |
Apperantly, a buffer overflow exploit that involves IE 5.X and below has been developed from the posted code. This
was reported on Bugtraq. |
It may
give hackers an advantage but we don\'t know. We also don\'t know if it gives competitors any advantage. The best advice is to be sure to go to the microsoft update site frequently and make sure you have the latest updates. Do the same with your anti virus and firewall software. |
