on Cock fighting
I touched on this in another posting about violence and wonder if anyone else might want to speculate or opine or whatever we do here on the increase of violence after the shutting down of the cock fighting rings?
does anyone know how successful that was? background info here IPS – HAITI/DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Tensions Grow Over Poultry Ban | Inter Press Service |

Oh I see, they say cock fighting spreads disease.. |
sources which could not be published assured me that the Haitian embargo was completely arbitrary.. that it was in retaliation for the flooding of the Haitian egg market during the embargo to return aristide... that the egg producers here went into paup and sold eggs for a peso a piece and the local haitian egg producers collapsed
i have it from high authority that the ban was enforced by the importers of chicken into Haiti from the USA. That the ban will not be lifted... that Haiti inttends to become self sufficient in poultry production yes, cock fighting rings have closed all over the island!!! the lovely round buildings are going to ruin of course the top fights still go on.. the ones where the birds are worth in the six figures but i think that it has been bad fro the young men cock fighting is an old and noble past time we have too many cocks as it is in my humble opinion |
Well, the Haitian government has done much to keep its people in horrible conditions by trying to profit from the earthquake and imports from the DR. I hear Haitians are lucky if they can get one egg a month, and then it's typically poor quality. You need feed to supplement chickens egg production, which would also have to come from the DR and be taxed. When you put an import tariff on the feed, then it's going to be hard to sell eggs at a peso each.
What they need is an egg laying breed that can fight. Otherwise the male chicks are typically culled within a couple days of being hatched. I wrote an ethics paper on Cock-fighting in college and was expecting to write opposing it, but the more I read about it the more I realized that it was all relative to how chicken meat and eggs are produced, which is truly horrific. Still eat wings though! |
