IRS: Celebs Better Pay Taxes On Oscar Goodie Bags

POSTED: 11:54 am EST March 6, 2006

Jealous of all the swag given out at the Oscars?

Well, the Internal Revenue Service has a reminder for Oscar nominees and presenters.

Those pricey vacation packages and other gifts given to the stars are not tax free. In a statement, IRS commissioner Mark Everson says "movie stars face the same tax obligations as ordinary Americans."

"We want to make sure the stars `walk the line' when it comes to these goodie bags,” Everson said.
The luxury gift packages reportedly are valued at $100,000.

The IRS released a statement specifically aimed at warning movie stars to pay their taxes? You'd think they'd have better uses for their time.

yeah why should we work hard, and pay tax (which in my opinion is way too high for what it does, ie give politions big fat expensie accounts)(damn my spelling)

when the movie stars and whoever jus ponce in, stand there sayin how great they are, then flounce home drunk, with expensive goody bags, and think they are so above everyone else they shouldnt hav to pay tax on it?

i dont think so. they should get taxed bloody more than us. id rather do there job of turnin up a few hours a day in a nice sunny beach somewhere shooting the love scene with the latest hunk, than have to put up with my job bloody 40 hrs a week for some jackass who cant even speak english very damn well (my case anyway, stupid frog)

I counted 24 Oscars, with each winner being pretty well-publicised. You'da thunk the IRS could have written to them individually, as it's not exactly a secret who they are. Nope, it's the IRS being seen to do something. Hey ho. Big deal.

Of course it wasn't the press who made the big deal about it... it was GWB's IRS.

You folks need to get past the idea of incomes, and taxing them. Little people have incomes, the rich guys [essentially] own corporations. Rich people SELL stock, poor people buy stock for their 401K's. Warren Buffet's income is what, 100K a year? Hollywood stars and sports figures who know what they are doing get into real estate, off-shore banking, and incorporate themselves as soon as possible.

Yeah, I can't abide these multi-millionaire fantasy-merchants and otherwise dull-normal people who get paid obscene amounts 'cause they can do something with a ball... they aren't as smart as me, and it just isn't fair. But then somewhere in Lost Angels, there'll be a little boy who will be happy for a whole week 'cause he found a green GummiBear in the gutter.

Anyway, we are not a democracy, so people shouldn't be able to vote themselves an income. You don't even elect the President, the electoral college does.

[See? It's really easy to write like a lib... just hate everything.]
