I am 56 years old, I have been playing jazz guitar for 35 years in many small clubs where most of the time I can hear 50 cent in the background when I get finished playing gigs, or when our trio takes a break. The majority of people today only listen to the beats and lyrics. There might be a way to get people back into jazz. Recently I received an Email newsletter from Savoy Jazz, I clicked on the link and was very surprised at the direction that this company is headed in. They have combined some of my favorite Jazz songs with hip-hop beats in the background, and DJ's scratching. The problem I have with Rap/hip-hop is that the Dj's are only concerned with beats and not melody. They don't understand Key changes and melodic phrasing. Usually I can't listen to rap or hip-hop for more than five seconds before I get a headache and want to shoot someone. However this new Album I heard on the Savoy Jazz website, Rebop, was real cool. They have a Dizzy Gillespie song, Night in Tunisia, with a hip-hop beat, it was really good. I liked how it brought a new flavor to jazz while maintaining its inherent integrity. Do you think that this could help bring jazz back into the mainstream?
