Does anyone use DropBox? It's a simple service that creates a "Dropbox" folder on your computer that is synced to "the cloud". Big deal, right? Well, you can access those files from any web browser in the world or from a dropbox app on your phone, netbook, tablet, etc. You can do stuff like tell your phone to copy any photos you take to your dropbox account for immediate safekeeping.
I use it for version control of my work files. If I keep my current work files in the Dropbox folder, my work is always backed up, and every time I save a file, Dropbox makes a copy of that file at that point in time, so I can always go back to an earlier version if I screw something up or get a corrupted file. This is important when 1 file sometimes represents a week's work. I can also see exactly when I started and stopped working, just by looking at the dropbox event log. If you put pictures in the photos folder in Dropbox, it creates a nice photo gallery with slideshow. The handiest feature is inviting others to share a folder. When somebody changes a file on the shared folder, the file changes on everybody's computer who is sharing the folder. We work from home and do everything through dropbox now. People keep finding new uses for Dropbox (several of the 101 sites above are Dropbox-aware). Anyway, it's free, they give you 2GB of space and you can get more space by inviting others. In fact, they just doubled the extra space you get when somebody accepts your invitation. She here's my Dropbox invitation to GSUS. You (and me) get an extra half GB of Dropbox space if you sign up via this link. http://db.tt/d0aTS3MV |
