Default How do people go on dates without cars?
Can someone explain to me what the dating scene is like using the mta? Do both of you meet at the same place? Is the guy supposed to take the subway to pick the girl up and then go on their way?

Girls, what do you think about guys who have cars and ones who are subway riders?

Just curious... as you could see from my other thread I've been thinking about selling my car in order to live in my own apartment. I'm not sure what I should do. How much convenience am I giving up?

If you're living near a subway, you're gaining convenience, not losing it, when you drop the car.

Judging by the numbers quoted on your other thread, I'd definitely sell the car and pocket the cash. If you're really looking to sock some money away, sell the car and live with your parents for a few more months. You might be slightly put out, but it will be worth it in the long run.

Between parking rules, auto theft, parking tickets, gas prices, tolls, and everything else you can think of, you'll be much better off sans automobile in the metro area.

If a man offered to pick me up in a car, I'd probably refuse. I'd rather the guy have a few drinks and enjoy himself rather than worry about driving me home. Use the money you save to pick up the dinner tab and a cab home. That's how everyone I know does it.

P.S. I forgot to add that both parties to the date generally meet in the same place at a given time. Taking the subway with someone you don't know very well can be a bit awkward.

If you really feel comfortable with a date and want some degree of privacy en route to your date, you can always take a cab in stead of the subway. Or maybe meet at the date place, and than share a cab back to her place, than have the cab wait while you kiss her good night, or send it on its way if she invites you up.

A cab is an excellent idea, especially going home.

I'm not allowed to date, but years ago I met a cabbie who works evenings in Manhattan. He gave me his cell number, and whenever I needed transportation at the end of an evening, I would phone him about 1/2 hour before I wanted to leave, and he would pick me up.

My son and daughter have the number.

Sorry, no further information; illegal as far as the TLC is concerned.

Well, it's either that, my parole officer, or my mother.

In answer to this and your other question about moving out:

Pretend you don't have the car. Stay at home a few months, and use alternate transportation. See if it suits your lifestyle.

Keep in mind, for special weekends or trips, you can always rent a car. In the long run, it is cheaper than ownership.

They're coming to take him away, ha ha!

But back on topic. You are in the city. Make the date and meet her somewhere. That's it!

She will eventually find out you have a car and then she, her family, and her friends will all rely on you to take them to the outlets in LI (even though NJ is cheaper) and drive you to places so car-friendly as Times Square and Chinatown.

They will then ask you why you look so annoyed, puzzled by your inherent dislike of parking on Mott Street...
