Poll: More Britons Believe In Ghosts Than In God
POSTED: 6:57 am EST October 31, 2005 LONDON -- Here's one to ponder on Halloween. A new survey said more people in Britain believe in ghosts than believe in God. A poll of more than 2,000 people said 68 percent believe in ghosts and spirits, while 55 percent said they believe in the existence of God. Of the ghost believers, 12 percent claim to have seen an apparition. Seventy-six percent say reality television shows and films about the supernatural are part of the reason they're convinced ghosts are real. The poll was conducted by retailer Choice U.K.. It also finds that about 26 percent believe in UFOs and 19 percent believe in re-incarnation. But just 4 percent think the Loch Ness monster is more than a myth. |

we are jus a much less religious country, thank God! (see what i did there?!)
i wonder if by countin how many people believed in "god" they took into account ALL people of different religions, who believe in a god, but not the christian god. but yeah, religion for most people isnt as big a part of their lives as in america. MJ |

Well, we're a funny lot! You ask me what the deal is, and I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not surprised by any of it though. But if you get the impression that we all believe in ghosts and UFOs, etc., as a substitute for religion, then you're grabbing the wrong end of the stick. The thing that puzzles me most about that piece is this: Quote:

Sadly, 78% of all surveys are bogus (I made that figure up). But really, they're often used as marketing tools to get a product into the news when no actual news story exists. Take a survey, publish the result, and the product gets sneaked in through the back door. I don't know what the product would have been in this case, but it's likely to be the ultimate explanation. According to one erm, survey, nearly 20% of UK "news" now comes from surveys. I would give you a link, but I can't find anything handy right now. There's a video about it on the BBC Newsnight site, though, if you go and poke around a bit.

Idnew, I said "surprised", not "disappointed". I don't have a problem with believers, except when they start pushing their beliefs on to me.
I also "believe" in UFOs; it would be a bit silly for me not to, as I have seen one. But it was just that: an unidentified flying object, something in the air which didn't tally with any of my experiences of things that are normally in the air. I didn't see any aliens, and I have no reason to believe that the UFO was of extraterrestrial origin. There could be a perfectly mundane cause. It was at night and I was close to MoD land. Maybe I was abducted and those pesky aliens erased my memory, which would be a bit of a drag because that's just the kind of thing I should like to remember! As for extraterrestrial life, as someone wise put it: There are two possibilities: either there is life elsewhere in the universe, or there is not. Either one of these is astonishing. |
