Hey Yodi, I listen to drivel, too. And I quite like it in certain circumstances. The point is we can get that "drivel" elsewhere. And everywhere. This isn't just about jazz and classical versus pop. Frankly, I don't listen to CBC 1 for the music. It's AM radio, for God's sake. I listen to it for the intelligent talk and varied programming. Or used to, anyway. Not anymore. And my car doesn't get satellite radio.

Guy,
Actually, the first thing I noticed when I got up here was all the music on Radio One. I was unaware that the staff was locked out, and couldn't figure out why all this stale alterna-rock was erupting out the car radio. "Where's the brainy, esoteric babbling and oddball subject matter," I thought. I'm like you and pretty much only listen to radio in the car. I don't have a CD player in there. There's a tape deck, but it stopped working outside of Santa Rosa, New Mexico a few weeks back. |

What's wrong with being elitist. Does everyone have to be a fucking moron? I love sports radio, but I also love the CBC. I get pissed off when Dave Pratt talks about politics just like I'd get pissed off hearing Madona on the CBC. Has anyone heard the state of American public Radio? Last time I checked it choked on balls!
The CBC is a great Canadian institution, one of the finest in the world. When I think of my identity as a Canuck it's one of the first things that comes to mind. I gained my first exposure to jazz, like Brian said, listening to the CBC. And (no offence Brian) I'm a few years younger, that's a few generations of jazz fans from the same public radio station! When I was a kid, one of my dreams was to play on the CBC! When I did my first Jazz Beat show a few years ago I was beside myself. But fuck it. Bring on the JAMFs. Can we get some Toby Keith? I love that shit. |

Hey Everyone,
as someone whose last CD is subtitled "Sessions From CBC Vancouver", I haven't a prayer of appearing disintersted on this issue, but I do have a hypothetical question. If the CBC is run with public funds, should the CBC reflect the interests of its funders? Let's assume that there was a a nationwide plebicite tomorrow, and as a result the CBC started broadcasting nothing but porn, WWF and Dr. Laura. If you're going to force people to fund the CBC through their taxes, how do you justify using their taxes to fund something that most of them don't seem to want? It seems to me that you could point out that public discourse is a necessary component of having an informed electorate. This might justify some political programs. But then, the CBC, however much I might prefer it to the Fox network, is hardly without a stake in the political scene. A conservative government might spell the end of the network entirely. Is it just me, or is there a hint of liberal bias in its news coverage? But anyway I put the question to you all. If you make the public fund the CBC, should you use it to broadcast whatever they tell you they like? |

I think what Blythe is saying is that we should all be directing our energy and comments to someone at the CBC who may, indeed, take them into consideration. In the absence of unsolicited input, they may turn to ratings as a measure of what is out there in terms of public opinion. We are all members of the public and should let our voices be known in an effective way; especially those here who are passionate about this. It has a better chance of having an effect than ranting to each other. That said, I believe it is a good idea to think (or chat) your ideas out before going off half-cocked and saying something that you might later regret; or perhaps worse, not saying something clearly enough, so that your real point is missed.
Let's tell the CBC what we think. http://www.cbc.ca/contact/index.jsp |

For what it's worth, this is what you will see after you send them a message:
"...your feedback is important to us! All e-mails are read and your comments, complaints, and concerns are added to our Audience Reaction Report. Each week, the report is distributed to our senior producers, programmers and the President and CEO, Robert Rabinovitch." |
