It just happened to me today.
I got a call from BestBuy.com asking me if my wife ordered 20 pairs of headphones today. Total was $554.57. I told them no way and they suspended the purchase. Next I called MBNA Master-card and reported the transaction. They connected me to the manager who connected me to the fraud department. The guy in the fraud department then read off some more charges today. $1.00 at Yahoo $1300.00 at the Home Shopping Network. $556.00 at CheapTees - I'm thinking Tee Shirts. $308.00 at an on line Shoe store The fraud guy (Dave) said the one dolor was a test to see if the card was valid. They credited it all back to me and canceled the card pending my replacement. I am very careful about shredding and such but there is no way to be perfectly safe and still use the card. If Best buy hadn't called me this could have been a big loss for MNBA. You guys watch yer top knot!:toast ![]() |

Happened to Mrs. Sin last Christmas.... Over $6,000 charged within two days... until Visa finally got around to asking us about it.
They traced it to a temporary Christmastime employee working at the local Mervyn's department store... she'd taken Mrs. Sin's card along with a couple of others and run-off the numbers [including the ones on the back] as well as the driver's license numbers. Had her on video. The case was plea-bargained down to a nothing misdemeanor thanks to Visa. Never did get an apology from Mervyn's... ![]() I've worked a few identity theft cases --even back when it was a relatively new crime... The poor victims are in for a wild ride. Everybody ought to have a really good crosscut shredder... cheap insurance. |

So how did somebody get your card number DB? I'd already heard about how employees switch credit cards and you should look at it before leaving the store or the cash register to make sure it's yours.
How about when a bank gives you a new signature card because you can't answer any of the security questions and a new one is signed and somebody starts cleaning out your savings or checking account then they get a new credit card sent to their address. That happened to me. Woman was stupid though she used her real address and transferred the funds from my account to hers that she had in another state. ![]() |

Shreder is a Fellowes DM15C crosscut. It shreds 15 pages at a time plus credit cards and compact disks. :zip
I order stuff on line very frequently to take advantage of both the lower costs and to avoid the 8% intra-state sales tax. However, even ordering a pizza you give a cc#, exp date, name and telephone #. If the kid is a crook, he can sell the info. My pet peeve is merchants that print name and full cc# with exp date on their receipts. ![]() |

i worked at tesco ( a supermarket) about 2 yrs ago, and some guy gave me a stolen card. luckly the card had been reported stolen, so when the msg came up sayin was was dodgy i casually went and called a manager.
anyway, they got the guy and the police came down and i had to give a statement etc. then i heard nothin about it. a yr later the coppers called me askin me to come to the station to do another statement coz the guy was pleading inncoent (even tho they had cctv). and by this time i couldnt remember him from adam. but i was told i had to go to court as a witness, luckly it never came to that as about a week b4 the court case he changed his plea. i had about 3/4 in the 2 yrs i worked there, unfortunatly they are quite common. and counterfit money, people tried that on too. lol tho one peice i had looked like it had jus been photocopied! I have one credit card that I use for questionable purchases... like online stores, mail-order and such.
It's in a different form of my name than all the others and I keep the limit very low. I've also requested a continuous "fraud alert" on it. They are supposed to call to verify any purchase over $200. So far, they haven't bothered when I bought a camera and Mrs. Sin bought a gazillion 2-1/2 lb cans of peanuts and other stuff from http://www.vadiner.com that totalled well over $200. We've been giving these gourmet peanuts for Christmas gifts since the early '80's... when I "discovered" the Virginia Diner while back there on an extradition. You'll never taste better peanuts. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
