Default CBC Jazz Beat to end at the end of 2006...
Sad news..

Looks like CBC's flagship jazz show Jazz Beat hosted by Katie Malloch is going to be toast at the end of this year... At least that's the word I got on my voice mail today by someone in the know...

Here's hoping for an after-life.. Jazz Beat is a great show and I hope with enough letters of support it will continue...

regards..

I haven't seen or heard an official confirmation of this but I have heard it as a rumour.

Programs have been saved through public pressure in the past. I feel very strongly that this is a program worth saving. If you feel this way also, let CBC audience relations know that you really like JazzBeat and want to hear it continued. (I've already done this, but my support doesn't carry as much clout as people from outside the Corp.)

Here's the url for CBC contact info:

http://www.cbc.ca/contact/index.jsp

or here's the phone number for CBC audience relations:
1-866-306-4636

Writing carries a little more clout than voice, but both are good support and are reviewed (and sometimes heeded).

Here's my leter to CBC:

"I was brought up on CBC Radio where my mother sang with both Nicky Goldshmidt and John Avison and the CBC Orchestra in the 1940's and early '50's. I have also been recorded and interviewed countless times myself by both CBC radio, Radio Canada and both networks' television broadcasts.

Serious music, like jazz and classical, has always been a major part of CBC Radio and frankly it is under seige by the forces of pop culture on the CBC. Only on CBC, apart from sporadic co-op stations can you hear music without commercial intrerruption. It is our national treasure.

Jazzbeat is a good example of everything that is good about the CBC. Please don't take this program off, as rumours have it you might. Katie Malloch and Claire Lawrence are both a great asset to our public broadcaster. Without that program we will descend into the trap of commercial. jazzy pop music masquerading as the real thing. Just because there's a walking bass doesn't make it jazz and Jazzbeat knows the difference.

Music lovers and musicians across Canada and internationally will lose a lot if this program is removed from the air.

I emailed CBC after I read this and I told them how upset I would be if the rumour were true and I said if it was true I would be forced to run for parliament in the next election, and I must have really intimidated them with that because I got an incredibly prompt reply from Leslie someone, an assistant something at Audience Relations, who wrote, "At this point in time, we have not been informed of any plan to cancel the program Jazz Beat." And she said she would pass my message on to higher powers.

Jeez . . . I completely forgot about this thread. I meant to post that, to the best of my knowledge, it is a FALSE RUMOUR! Although I guess lots of people writing in to support the show is not a bad thing
