Well, that's not at all likely to make them even more pissed off, is it?

EDIT: Come to think of it, is there any action Egypt's government could take at this point that wouldn't either smell of weakness or enrage them further?

Hey, SomethingAwful linked to this. Fun stuff! I bet "off the pig" sounds even worse to people who consider pigs too dirty to eat.

This is an interesting stream on current affairs in egypt http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/
Jinx. I was just about to post that link.

Ive done so little research, but isnt the current Egyptian government a moderate government?

I had always seen Egypt as a stable nation in the area. Im sure there is plenty of room from improvement but Egypt was certainly not the biggest problem by far I guess it would defend on your definition of "moderate". Any government that hasn't faced a free vote in decades would have a hard time being considered moderate in my books.

Mubarak could be worse, but it isn't hard to be the better of a bad bunch when talking about Arab authoritarian regimes.

The Egyptian army is a conscript army. This may not end well

You don't need that kind of measures when you're already monitoring emails and tapping phone records.

Do you think al jazeera is reporting in an unbiased manner here? I cannot imagine how they could play down this situation, and it seems they are not. They give the impression that the rioting is very bad.

They alternate between "rioters" and "protesters". I don't know if they have an agenda.

from the journalist who has just been on....

I would hope that the army being made of conscripts would help both the protesters and the soldiers to understand that they are just the same people

This would be a better discussion if it was contained to a single thread.

Except IIRC you replied to my post by saying that you didn't think it was likely to happen in Egypt...

You said I was hardly alone, inferring that you agreed with me, whereas when I was talking it up - you were talking it down. People can make their own minds up on our respective positions on this topic...
