Default Good free web hosting site?
(didn't know where to post this so put it in GD)

Was just wondering if anyone new of a good free (ad-free too) hosting site. I'm gonna be doing web design next semester and wouldn't mind having my own free site to play with and learn more about PHP and MySQL. I already know my fair share of HTML and CSS and know a little PHP and javascript (writing to text files etc etc).

My tafe has provided me with a site of my own but I don't have access to MySQL and I've tried X10Hosting.com but it's slow as all hell and 80% of the time the site doesn't even load. I used to be with X10Hosting about 2 years ago and it was great, but now it just s*cks unless you pay.

So all I really need is one to play around with and learn and one with good uptime.

If it's just for learning PHP / website development you would do well to install PHP / Apache / MySQL on your computer. That way you are always running a web server and the responses will be pretty instant.

There are tons of tutorials on setting up LAMP / WAMP (Linux/Apache/Mysql/PHP or Windows/etc etc) on google.

You probably won't find a free host that allows you to have control as much as you will soon want and it doesn't sound like you want to make a public website.

IIS is a Microsoft web server designed for running asp/.net scripts. You can get PHP to run on IIS but personally I'd rather shoot myself in the ear.

That's what I suggested to start with.

And getting IIS to run PHP is not simple. There are WAMP install packages that will configure php/mysql/apache on windows with a couple of clicks.
