I have a 2000 Impala (blue), which has a large chip in the paint near the rear wheel, it has a chip of paint missing about 1.5-2" in diameter, and it's starting to rust around it, and the paint is easy to peel off in that area.
How do you fix this so it doesn't rust the **** up on you? Thanks. |

In UK you can get kits from places like Halfords (yuk..) UK or any decent car parts place.
It will take a day or two of 'touching up' but you basically need to sand/scour away the paint from and around the chipped area, then apply some 'lipstick' stlye wax to fill in the tiny dent. You then start applying paint in stages, building up layers. You won't be able to use your car during this stage obviously as the paint will need to dry free from dirt.... The insructions will be included in the kit and they're about £15 if you can find em. The hardest part is getting the correct paint for your car so you may need to get it ordered in. The other way is take it to a bodywork garage and it'll cost roughly £50 i reckon. |

Usually you should treat the area by scrubbing as much of the rust off as possible, usually with some delicate sanding.
You could also try some products that help remove rust but I don't know whether that would be ideal. It might affect your paintwork. After treating it, as said by Monki, you build up the layer of paint and then finish off with a few coats of lacquer. Although getting it to the same level as surrounding paint is quite difficult. |
