Why wouldn't they be? Aren't all DVDs 16:9? http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../confused1.gif

Edit: Except programmes that were made before 16:9 became the standard of course, like early episodes of The X-Files, but I'd want them in their original format because I don't know about you but I prefer to see the whole picture rather than have chunks cut off just so it can fill my screen with no black bars.

There are plenty of 1.33:1 aspect ratio DVDs out there. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../confused1.gif

Anyway, X-Files is as well. Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1

Here is a list of 11,395 4:3 DVDs. Pick a letter. Then there are a fair amount of 1.85:1 as well.

1.78:1 (16:9) is actually one of the lesser popular aspect ratios for DVD releases.

I think this is an American thing because I've never come across any 4:3 DVDs where the original source material was 16:9 or greater. AFAIK in the UK pan and scan died with VHS.

The episode that were broadcast in 4:3 I'd expect to be on DVD in 4:3, and the ones broadcast in 16:9 I'd expect ro be in 16:9

No DVDs aren't usually exactly 16:9 because the equivalent ratio use in movies is slighty wider, but TV programmes are made in 16:9 so their DVDs will be in that ratio.

Since the advent of HD over here in the states. Before then almost every show was still presented in 4:3 even if it was shot in 16:9. Now I know you guys over there are a good bit behind us in HD programming but many of your shows are in 16:9 even though they are in SD and that is most likely due to the increase in horizontal resolution in the PAL format in general.

I just looked it up on IMDb and for The X-Files series 1-4 were in 1:33:1 (4:3) and series 5-9 were in 1.78:1 (16:9). I'd very surprised if the UK DVD release didn't maintain those aspect ratios.

So, then there is the answer for Pug, part is 4:3 and part is 16:9. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/excited1.gif

Some of the early DVDs used to be double-sided, 4:3 on one side and then widescreen on the other. My South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut is in this format. I also remember that the first Harry Potter film had seperate releases for widescreen and full screen version, used to be a pain in the ass making sure I didn't sell customers the wrong version. There were more that were pressed that way, but those are the two that spring to mind.

I don't think that they still press those versions though, think its widescreen or bust now. *huzzah*

http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/cry1.gif Shame, but then again if that's how they were shot that's how they were shot...

Is that only the episodes that were 16:9 originally or the 4:3 episodes as well? I guess what I'm asking is which series of The X-Files do you have?

sbgctsa 01-14-2009 12:17 AM

Found this on amazon user reviews

Number of Discs: 61
Screen Format:
1.33:1 Full Screen (Seasons 1-5)
1.78:1 Widescreen (Seasons 6-9)
2.35:1 Widescreen (Feature Film)

Looks like bungle was right.

User-Luser 01-14-2009 03:08 AM
