Thanks everyone, supersonic has done an awesome job with an FTP server. It's taking a while due to my crappy 512Kb upload speeds, but if everything goes well, I'll have the Windows I paid for tomorrow afternoon.

Thats cool. Just let me know. I can do it as well for you if needed easy peasy.

12 download, 2 upload here.

Since you are stuck with 512, might want to think about sticking to the US. You are going to lose a LOT of bandwidth on that 512 line going over to Europe. More then half I would imagine. Would be much faster to get things transferred both ways if you stick to the states for everyone.

Mine goes from 2Mb upload in most of the states to 800Kb upload to the Netherlands.

Well, I max out my upload to the Netherlands, so it's been great so far. I get 200-250KB/s download from Europe, too. The final transfer should be done by 7am PST (GMT -8) tomorrow morning, and at the rate I can download from supersonic, I'll have my files back by the end of tomorrow.

Files received, extracted and rarred.
If our routing is any good, you should be able to get a max download speed from me of 1300 kb/s :)
What's your download speed btw?

Then your ISP's routing must suck. I've sent at 2000kb/s (20mbit) to quite a few USA people.

Isn't it wonderful knowing that you have to jump through hoops when you actually pay for the product...

Its things like this that make me regret many of my software purchases.

I need a favor (file transfer related)

Ok, I bought the digital download version of Vista Ultimate x64, but to extract the files, you have to be running a 64-bit OS in the first place. Well, I'm running XP Pro x86, so I'm pretty screwed at the moment.

Could I transfer the setup files to someone with a 64-bit OS (XP or Vista, doesn't matter), have them extract the contents, then transfer the new contents back to me?

I'm not even sure if this is possible -- we're talking 3-4GB of data here. If it is, let me know.

Thanks!

viagracheapest 11-30-2008 02:37 AM

To be honest, I'd give Microsoft a call. Requiring a 64-bit OS just to extract the information is just rediculous [thumbdown]

unsamiSlini 11-30-2008 02:39 AM

Yeah, the only option is to pay for the "back-up" DVD, it's like $15 or something.

Unfortunately, I bought my version from the educational "Ultimate Steal" website where it states nothing about having to have a 64-bit OS to extract the files. However, it DOES say this on the regular MS Marketplace, so I'm afraid there's nothing else I can do.

I'd really prefer not to have to pay even more money to get this working.

Zebrabitch 11-30-2008 04:04 AM

Based on average upstream speeds it would take roughly 6 hours for the transfer each way.

st01en_lox 11-30-2008 04:45 AM

I'd do it, but I'm seconds away from dismantling my computer (seriously). Can you download a torrented vista CD? With your valid serial it shouldn't be a problem? (or is it? I don't want to be doing something bad in a thread full of moderators [oops])

unsamiSlini 11-30-2008 06:45 AM

I dunno about torrenting it. I'd prefer not to, not only because of the legality, but also because I'm not sure of the quality of the thing.

Feloascarlelt 12-01-2008 12:58 AM

What's your upload speed? I'm willing to do it for you if the speed is decent..
10mbit upload here, but it depends on the routing from Amsterdam > USA....

Would you like me to open a ftp server?

gDGwm8BC 12-01-2008 05:11 AM

I'm willing to help also, only have a 768kb/s upload so will take a little while. Have 20mb download though.

Could also setup an ftp here to if needed.
