Anyone know anything about PHPBB?

i am trying to set up a forum on a website and i get this error

"Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) "

the website is empty, just got it yesterday.

i have ftp'ed all the files in the phpbb folder to the site, and have followed all the instructions from this video: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/753376...b_forum_part1/

i have done everything asked in the video, but i cannot get past the 1st step of the install process. I literally know nothing about installing a forum, but the vid made it look pretty easy.

the website is through godaddy... and they support the latest mysql. Any ideas or suggestions?

well, as I recall here are the steps (generalized) for setting one up.
1. You need to either manually or have the scripts automatically create the tables in your sql server/database/whatever you wanna call it. Without these tables and the database set up, the forum can't do anything.
2. You have the forum scripts put into proper directory for your website (sounds like you did this), and execute the installation scripts.
3. Once installation scripts are run, you remove the files that were used for installation so that nobody else can do that again (security).

So, think about your process and ensure you are following this.

Ok...

So what you are saying I hope, is that when I downloaded the phpbb file, before I ftp it up to my site I need to trigger an .exe file in the phpbb file to create the database, then upload all of it to the site?

If this isn't what you mean, then where on my site would I find what you are talking about? There were only 3 folders on it new, one was empty, one was for stats and one held the godaddy welcome pages.

Thanks for ur patience... Sry if the answer to my ? Is obvious, I just don,t see it.

First step is to create the actual database either using the command line or something like phpmyadmin. GoDaddy may have another app they use, found in your "Control Panel".

After you create the database, you need to create a user that has full access to that database.

Now, once that is done, you will run the install from php. Most of the time for database and users the name will use your user account first, followed by the database name. So, lets say you account for GoDaddy is chicken and your database name is taco, you would enter this for the database name:

chicken_taco

If the user name you created for your mysql database was pepsi, then you would enter this for the user name:

chicken_pepsi

Every host is different, but this is the norm across many hosting providers I have used or installed phpBB on.
