Why do we have Christmas smilies all year long?

Why do we have them all the time? I mean, it's nice to live in a mindset that every day is Christmas, but most people here are over the age of 8. Some of these smilies shouldn't exist anyways..

'Cause they're cute?

As for [xmascool], that's quite common down here - you may not realise that Christmas is in the middle of the southern hemisphere's summer.
This one [xmascandle], is inappropriate 'cause his actual birthday is believed to be in April.

Well, they make more sense than the [beta] one. I'd trade them all in for the return of the old "suspicious" smiley.

Old Crazy would kick the **** out of suspicious with one hand tied behind it's back. That would be if it had a hand and a back.

Before it was decapitated and put on a forum, I am sure it could kick major ass.

bitymnmictada 08-07-2007 04:11 PM

Because its easier to just keep them rather then to remove them again http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/wink1.gif
from Langaleer IIRC!

realfan87 08-07-2007 04:19 PM

Langaleer is lazy.

hauptdaunnila 08-07-2007 05:10 PM

If they removed them there would be random text in posts like [ xmascandle ]

Then people would be like WTF!?

I thought it was kinda obvious...

I'm not complaining; they're the only smilies I use. [xmasthumbup]

Bahhh Humbug! [xmastongue]

I don't think futuremark should be promoting a religious holiday on any day of the year, to be honest. [xmasgrumpy]

How is it promoting a religious holiday? If anything, they are just festive, which is rather ambiguous in and of itself.

Just to proove that point, think about the millions off people celebrating Christmas who aren't actually that religieus afterall...

they're regalia worn during a christian holiday. yeah, they've become secularized, but they still have religious baggage that comes from traditional christian iconography, the red mitre of Nicholas of Bari, as everyone knows.

yes, in nations with predominately Christian populations where the holiday has been institutionalized. the rest of the world, no.

I don't mind them at all! I don't use them unless it's really Christmas, but they're no bother.

And why was religion brought into this? Please make a new thread in the religion/politics boards if you want to discuss that aspect.

andrekuper 08-08-2007 01:43 AM

i find them offensive

Maybe, I was baptized but I do not believe in a god described in the bibel nor in the tales told in that book so I can´t be counted religieus really. But I do appriciate christmas, the festive athmosphere, though commerce is ruining it abit, the giving and recieving of gifts is something allot of people appriciate.

What you call the rest of the world is only ´big´ because only about one third off the population is christian last time I checked and those who are not like Islam, Hindouisme, Boudisme ect have their own holidays in which they exchange gifts. If this would be an asian board there might be smillies with boedha, if it were an islamic board there might be some smillies showing the holy prophet. If you´re in the minority then you´re bound to take some things which might offense you for granted, in a democratic society the majority votes win http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/wink1.gif

Edit, before getting called for continueing the religieus aspect, in the above the clear intention I hope shows that I mean religion isn´t so much to blame but democracy http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/wink1.gif
