If you receive harsh critisisim from someone you trust in a tense situation, it's not humiliation. As noted in the article. If it's from someone you don't trust and don't respect, it is.
So a leader/teacher must always be aware of the circumstances so they can use the proper tool. The great leaders adjust, while the bad ones keep using the same technique because it worked once before. IT's similar to motivating people. It's a lot easier if they know you and respect you, but not required. You just have to work it differently. My favorite line. Motivate with beer, not with fear. Because fear only works when you're watching, and if you spend all you time watching, you're looking behind you instead of in front of you. |

I agree Some folks need one form and others need another Good managers become great managers when they realize how to change and how to properly motivate, including being a leader, not a Boss |

I agree with rah. I was once intimidate to do a good/better job so instead I gave up. It really didn't matter enough to me to bother with the fear, so I got rid of it. However, had they bothered to get to know me and find out what I am motivated by then they would have done a better job.
Revised Golden Rule; Do onto others as they would have you do onto them. Threatening someone is a good way to get them moving, just be aware that they may be heading to the door. |
