The Lord of the Rings (not the Hobbit) has a huge section for appendices in the later releases of the book, I believe these are what Ruz speaks of. My particular version has:
  • Annals of the Kings and Rulers
  • The Tale of Years
  • Family Tree
  • Calendar
  • Writing and Spelling
  • Languages and People
All of that comprises the last ~20% of the book. It is substantial material. Not exactly correct, the novel was released in three parts, only months apart. But it is, in fact a single novel, this is an excerpt from my book explaining that:

"...The Lord of the Rings is often erroneously called a trilogy, when it is in fact, a single novel, consisting of six books plus appendices, sometimes published in three volumes."
I know that the lotr books have huge appendices but iirc they really don't give that much info to the backstory. They are really just lists and facts. ( I just checked and our third book has around 200 pages of appendices... plus all of them have loads of maps.)

I know that they are one book. I just said that they were released originally in three parts. First two in 1954 and third in 1955. (Or at least that's what the copyright says in the books.)
