I think it's silly to claim christians, muslims, jews, hindus, scientologists, mormons, catholics, and so on are all worshiping the same god in different ways.

Scientology is not a religion unless you would choose to take a second rate failed Sci-Fi writer as 'The Messiah'!

I don't think being absurd precludes the possibility that a system of beliefs is a religion.

By definition any religion is a belief system but it does not work the other way round. Altruism, Hedonism, Capitalism, etc are all belief systems but they have no reliance upon any form of religion nor do they preclude any religious conviction.
