Default 'Confidence' the 15th club
I was out playing one of usual pre-work nines today and found myself missing a few greens. But I was getting up and down on the greens I missed. As each hole passed my confidence in my putter grew by leaps and bounds. I started thinking that when you get on a role like I did, 'Confidence' becomes that 15th club in your bag. To me that is invaluable and really a game changer.
It was weird, like a switch went off and putts were falling. I know a few on the forum have had these days and its a good feeling. Do you have that 15th club?

i know i did yesterday with only 9 putts on the front and 12 on the back. i wasn't missing anything even if i wasn't leaving myself with many long putts. draining more than a few 10' putts really got me on a roll like i've never been on before and hopefully i can continue it in the future! Confidence is huge especially with putting and my short game for me.

Generally it's with my putter, but lately I just can't miss with the 3w. It's an amazing feeling when you just know the guy's with you are going to say "Damn dude, that was huge".

Booze is my 15th club, dead serious. When I am having a bad 9 I have a few pops and that always helps. Never get wasted just a few to relax me. Golf is such a mental game that just gets to me sometimes when I am swinging bad. Great topic Tad!

Tad: any chance the putter was performing cause it knew you were thinking about replacing it? Just saying.

I am supremely confident that I will hit some good shots, and some what the heck was that shots.

Dude, 21 putts for a round is freaking awesome!! I think the best I have ever done was 26 or 27....what the heck did you shoot for that round?

My 15th club, if I have one, is humor. At least I think I'm funny. Sometimes I think I annoy the bejeebus out of my playing partner(s), but it keeps me in a good mood, which helps a lot.

Confidence in golf is fleeting as it depends on so many things. I have been "in the zone" playing golf, but I think it has happened for me only on a shot by shot basis. That 20 foot uphill putt with 18 inches of break that you just know you're going to make. Recently I had 157 yards into a stiff wind that required a draw to hit the green as I was behind a stand of trees. I went into that shot visualizing what I needed to do, and executed it exactly right. I had the confidence to pull it off, visualized what I wanted, then played the shot. My handicap is still higher than I want it to be, and I don't always hit shots I'm proud of. But I'm getting beyond "hit and hope" which is a good thing.

So although I can't say I've had complete rounds where my confidence soared, I have been able to build confidence through a round where one (or two) bad shots, and even a bad hole, doesn't ruin my whole round and doesn't ruin my mood. I want to add that finding equipment you're comfortable with really helps boost confidence levels. And in this, I think having confidence in your golf ball is HUGE in bringing a higher level of confidence to your whole game.

Confidence is so important because it can make or break you, try playing a tournament while you and your wife are fighting or there has been a recent tragedy, it really sucks the confidence out of everything, your swing, your mind state and you start doubting yourself and next you know, bam a triple bogey after a nice birdie. Confidence is really my 15th club, not my titleist prov1x that I was joking about earlier in the thread hahah!

Confidence in golf is a funny beast. If I start off the first few holes with swing issues (chunking chips, wayward drives, etc), I get down and feel like the entire round is shot to hell before it really even begins. I have only had that confident, in the zone feel once, that I know of. It was about 5 years ago and I was even par thru 8 holes. I had no idea where I was at, what my score was, I just knew I was hitting good shots, wasn't over thinking everything and was just hitting the ball. My Dad comes up to me and says, "you do realize you are even par through 8, don't you?". It hadn't dawned on me, until that moment. I ended up shooting my lowest score ever that day (81), even though I stumbled a bit after Dad telling me where I was at. I am an emotional guy, and a perfectionist to boot (why do I play golf again?), so I struggle with keeping my confidence up on the course.

There is a chapter in the book "Your 15th Club" by Bob Rotella that is all about the importance of confidence. I remember telling my instructor that I was the worse putter in the world. He told me I am because I have convinced myself that I am. My entire thinking changed after that and after reading that book. There's a lot to be said about confidence!
