My oldest son. He lives in Mexico and announced that when I visit we are going to play golf, so I'd better learn. Golf is now part of each visit with both sons. What could be better than walking and talking with your sons for a few hours in park-like settings (actually better and more scenic than most parks)? And, of course, when not playing, we now talk about golf and golf equipment.

Oddly enough, a lady my dad dated for a short time got me into the game when I was 12. I'd never been much into golf or even heard about it before then truly as we grew up in a depressed part of town and had no access to it. When my dad dated the lady, we moved in and she took me to the driving range. Then I got a starter set for Christmas and after that I was in group lessons for 2 weeks that summer. From there it was pretty much hit or miss for the next 10 or so years. I grew up on a par 3 because it was cheap.
That lady will forever be etched into my brain and heart for getting me into golf. |

My grandfather, whom I never got a chance to play a round of golf with. He lived 4 hours away so we only saw he and grandma maybe twice yearly. I can remember he never rode in a cart. He always had a pull cart for the game experience. He played several times a week and I was too young at the time to play along at 10 yrs old. I remember him talking about etiquet and some great golf stories. He really enjoyed my interest in the game because none of his children played. At 14 I started playing with a few friends who's parents were members at a local course so I could play as a guest for little to nothing. I was getting better and anticipating going up to Tuscaloosa that Christmas to finaly play a round of golf with grandpa and a few of his friends. My grandfather passed away before were able to see them again. My father never played and my brothers have never played either. But my oldest brother is seriously thinking about getting into playing.

OHHHHHH MAN. That was funny.
I worked at a country club, we used to take girls with us and make them hold the flags and get us beers. It was a lot of fun, then I started hitting the ball well and got hooked. Not really a heart wrenching story |

At a very young age (I'm currently 25 and married), my dad started taking me out to par 3's with just a 7-iron and a putter. He would let me ride around with him on the "big" courses during his work outings and tournaments. Although he was never the greatest golfer in the world, he taught me the basics of the game, from course management to course etiquette. His computer was filled with golf games ranging from Jack Nicklaus Golf (our favorite golfer!) to Links386 to the more recent Tiger Woods games.
I also have an uncle (Mom's brother) who grew up working on a golf course here in Omaha for 20-some odd years... who is probably the best golfer in the family. I would receive hand-me-down clubs from him, tips, and golf at the course he managed. I just feel lucky to have a family that loves golf. Dad tore the rotater-cuff(?) in his shoulder this year....so unfortunately, he's sidelined until at least next year. Was a big bummer... it kinda stinks walking 9 alone this year... ![]() I'm just curious how everyone came to love the game. |

I played very casually a few times a year until I retired from my job at a fairly young retirement age (50). I played golf a little bit at our local course and told the manager there to keep me in mind if he ever had a PT job opening. He actually created a PT position for me to handle their accounting. After working there, I started playing more and more and my husband decided we were going to take lessons together. After 6 lessons and a good bit of improvement, I was hooked. I've continued lessons and play so much now it's ridiculous.

My best friend bought a used set at a garage sale and we would go down to the practice football field and try to get "goalposts in one". We had a lot of fun with it and we decided to join the high school golf team. Mom and Dad bought me a set of clubs at JC Penney.
Found out later that my uncle was an avid golfer, never got to play with him because he only golfed during the week and let the "kids" play on the weekends since he was retired. His name was Paul McSpaden. I can't remember if he was "that" guys brother or cousin. |

Well I'm 21, and I have a very similar story to yours. My dad always took me to golf outings with him, and I loved watching him and his friends play. He took an old 7 iron of his and cut it down to my height, and I always went into our yard and swung away, hitting the same two golf balls over and over into a net. Finally, when I finished 8th grade my dad went golfing with the same buddies. I came along fir the first time in a while, and he asked me to play. I did, and I shot very well for my first ever round. He later told me his plan was to get me interested so that I might play high school golf. It definitely worked, and I became a captain and one of the better golfers to ever play there. (Not a lot of talent comes through there.) Ever since, I am so addicted to golf. I absolutely love the game, and there is nothing like playing a round with my dad. Absolutely the best thing ever.

Dad was Big Tennis guy in the 80's. Then moved onto Golf when he got older.
When I was a kid, I sat down and watched Ben Crenshaw win the Masters in 95 with my Dad. They were playing up the fact that he flew directly to Georgia from his Mentor's Funeral. When he rolled in the last putt and started crying on the 18th green, it was a big moment for me and my Dad and I was hooked on Golf ever since. |

My late grandfather was my gateway into golf. He was kind of a harda** and I started riding in the cart with him at about 10 years old (31 now). Before I got to play he made sure I knew everything about etiquette on the course and was quick to reinforce it. He respected the game a great deal and that respect is part of my game now. I played for probably 5 years before I ever even hit a driver and he had just gotten a brand new Taylormade R360xd driver and let me hit it the first day out after he got it. I was probably 15 and was hitting that thing about 275 and after the round he put it in my bag and said he'd never hit that damn thing that far so it's mine now. He was one heck of a golfer and I didn't beat him until he was 81 years old which was also our last round together. I still think about him every round I play, and thank him for introducing me to the greatest game anybody can play.

Back in the early 60's I got a job caddying at a local country club. Monday was caddie's day and all my buddies played. One of the members sold me his year-old set of clubs (1961 wilson staff irons, top-flite woods and golf bag) for $100. Golf balls were expensive so I roamed the course for lost golf balls walking home from caddying. I was hooked!

My dad played on a regular basis as I was growing up. I never paid attention and actually thought it looked boring. See I was born with a soccer ball attached to my foot. I played since I was 3 (just like my son) but one summer I decided to play. He would drop me off at the executive course and I would hit the ball all over the lot. I would listen to the old timers in the lunch rooms and watch golf on TV (when it was on) my dad really never pushed he just let it happen. I still remember the first time I beat him, 28 years ago. He has won only twice in the span of time. But there isn't a day that goes by that I don't thank him for my first set and the 1000s of rounds we have played. He is my favorite golfer and best playing partner.
