Default Office lady enquiry about toilet manners!
A close office co-worker went to Egypt for her summer holidays and is asking me why do you people use water in the toilet (thinking it was really weird!) and must have heard that men wee sitting like women.

What is a good explanation considering her Western upbringing without causing undue offence? I gave her a reply but could have done better!

The same reason we would wash our hands after using the toilet.

In fact, our hands are probably less soiled than other parts, so it'd make sense that if we're going to wash our hands, might as well wash elsewhere too.

That only proves that using your cell phone while on the toilet is unsanitary; whether you are muslim or non muslim.

well i dont believe that nearly all (92%) mobile users use the mobile while on the toilet. the article makes it known that it is the hands that have feacel matter that gets on the phone and non muslims dont wash their behinds, they smudge it with tissue. thats how the bacteria gets on their hands and then on thier mobile

Really??

I was raised to wash my hands after I did my business with the TP.

So I guess I am part of the 8%

No doubt.........

"The scholars mention that the superior course of action is to use both a dry substance such as toilet paper followed by washing with water"

Can anyone confirm this and is it from Sunnah because it doesnt make much sense to me? I think damp tissue is better to start with and then water.

The best way one can reply is explain that water is a great disperser. How is fecal matter formed if you think about it. Water in intestinal content is absorbed by the colon through its passage through the tract. And as water gets absorbed you get the characteristic stool forming. So naturally to break and disperse this stool the best medium would be water again. Also not to mention many ethnic groups have more prominent hair in the peri-anal region. For maximal clean around the hair threads water will do the trick. Just imagine scrambling dry tissue on fecal matter coating hair strands. I doubt it will do good.
And I was recently flying with two obese people, father and his adolescent son on a long flight. One of them visited the toilet or I think both during the course of the journey. I was ambushed between the window and the aisle and could literally smell toilet around my ambience. Thankfully it was during the 2 hours into the end of the journey.
Another reason is Muslims is the only cultural group which smells better coming off the toilet because we really soap our hands well and many are obsessive with good fragrant soap doing the job. I presume if you relied on tissue you wouldnt really obsess with cleaning hands very well since you wouldnt think they are that dirty in the first place.
