Morocco?
 

Any tips or advice on places to go, people to meet, things to experience please?

I'm looking for places and people that will enrich ones appreciation of Islamic culture in Morocco, in particular in relation to Islamic knowledge and sufism rather than tourist hotspots. Had enough of that. Although a few shopping recommendations wouldn't go amiss.

Fes is steeped in Islamic educational history. There are some beautiful sufi qasa'id recited at the Masjid Mawla Idris around Asr time every day and some really beautiful Qur'an recitations... I think they recite in Warsh in morocco for the most part. There is also the Qarawiyyin university there and an old theology school called the Bou Inania Madrasa.

Have been to Marrakech and Agadir also but don't remember any specific places that would help with the above query. They are both very touristy places... though the shopping is good. Fes is definitely the place to be though.

It depends what you're into and how much time you have. As mentioned above, Fes probably has the widest variety of 'Islamic' places to visit, although of course there are things in every city. If you're into doing Ziyarat and things like that, then there are several in Fes (the most prominent being Moulay Idris II) and Marrakesh (the Seven Rijal are a must for visitor to that city). If you're a bit more adventurous, or have more time on your hands, there are some places outside the major cities. Moulay Idris I (Zerhoun) is just one of the the most beautiful places in Morocco as far as I'm concerned. It's near Meknes, about an hour away from Fes. Moulay Idris was a great-grandson of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who was responsible for really establishing Islam in Morocco and uniting the Berber tribes in the Deen. There is also Moulay 'Abd al-Salam ibn Mashish in the north (he was the sheikh of Imam Shadhili), on the top of Mount Alam. That is quite a serious trek though.

Sidi Khalid basically covered the more famous go-to places. I would add Sayyidi Ahmad al-Tijani in Fes to that list. If you want to maximize the spiritual benefits I sincerily urge you to go to Jabal Alam to visit Moulay ´Abdussalam ibn Mashish, qaddasa'Llahu sirrahu l-´aziz.

Ahh, there are so many Awliya' to visit... what a blessed soil.

Is anti-Sufi propaganda very strong in Morocco ? In Germany, I asked some Moroccan about sufi people. But , I have got negative opinion.
I am wondering if any zawiya of Moroccan sufi order exist in Germany.
