In the excellent tafsir Ma'ariful Qur`an by Mufti Muhammad Shafi (rahmatullahi alayh), in the commentary of 2:55, it mentions a story. It says that the obstinate Israelites demanded to hear Allah Almighty Himself, and with the permission of Allah, Prophet Musa alayhissalam took 70 Israelites with him to Mount Tur. They all heard Allah. Of course, they were still obstinate, and the story continues. What I want to ask about is, What exactly did they hear? Did they really hear the Kalam of Allah? I am not talking about the debate about 'in which manner did Musa alayhissalam hear the Speech of Allah?' that is a classic Asha`ira/Maturidiyyah debate, rather I am asking whether they heard the same thing Musa alyhissalam did. If they did, doesn't that take away from some of Musa's prestige, that he was the Prophet who "heard" the Speech of Allah? I thought that was one of his special priveleges. Jazakum Allahu khayr. May Allah reward you all.

As-salamu alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh
From what I understand, the 70 who were chosen heard God speak WITH Moses (pbuh). Moses (pbuh) was the one who was addressed. I think the apparent meaning of the story is that the Jews heard the words that God spoke with Moses (pbuh), i.e. they heard heard the same thing, as that was what they requested. I don't see why it would take away from Moses (pbuh)'s prestige. Hearing God doesn't automatically translate into prestige. Look at Iblis. He heard God and even had a "conversation" (for a lack of a better word) with God. He also got his Dua accepted on the spot like the Jews. The fact that Jews disbelieved and were killed is evidence enough that they came nowhere near Moses' (pbuh) prestige. When they asked to see God, He killed them first. When Moses (pbuh) asked to see God, God actually gave Him a positive response. God called Moses (pbuh) from the valley of Tuwa - unexpectedly - and called Him to come to Sinai for a meeting. I think it's pretty clear the 70 Jews don't rival Moses (pbuh) in no way whatsoever. |
