I ask these questions out of ignorance, so please don't take offense.
I have heard that Muslims consider dogs to be "unclean" and never have them as pets. So I am wondering: * Is this truly a belief in Islam, or is this is just a cultural norm from countries that happen to be predominantly Islamic. In other words, is there something in Islamic theology about dogs or is it just a cultural tradition from different countries. * Does this belief or tradition vary from place to place? I know Islam exists all over the world. * Do some Muslims have dogs for pets? * What does "unclean" mean? * What do Muslims think about dogs and how they should be treated? I have read a couple things: * Muhammad had a cat. * Muhammad once protected a female dog who was giving birth so that no one would disturb her and her puppies. I don't know if those are true. |

I ask these questions out of ignorance, so please don't take offense. ![]() ![]() To answer your question. The saliva of dog is unclean, and if it licks a utensil, it has to be washed seven times before it can be considered as purified. Keeping a dog as a pet is absolutely haraam. Dogs are not allowed to be kept as pets. If a person keeps a dog in his house, Angels will never go to that house, and that house will be bereft of Allaah's Rahmah thereby. However, dogs can be kepts for other purposes, such as hunting and guarding livestock. Also, Rasoolullaah ![]() |

correction: black dogs do NOT have to be exterminated according to the shariah of Rasulullah (saws)! the hadith mentioned earlier was abrogated by a later command by rasulullah (no i can't quote it). this illustrates the importance of following qualified scholarship rather than opening hadith books and coming to one's own conclusions without first having study fiqh and the usool in some depth (i.e. with scholars). to relate back to the topic, dogs should be treated with respect as they are the creation of allah and should not be harmed killed or mistreated (doesn't the story of the prostitute who was forgiven for quenching a dog's thirst come to anyone's mind here?). however this respect and mercy does not mean that one should keep a dog in their house as that will deprive them of angels and blessings as br. Abdul Qaadir pointed out. and of course the saliva must be avoided as mentioned previously. |

Also, adding to this point. In Islaam, only a hukm (command) can be abrogated. However, a statement of aqeedah cannot be abrogated. The Hadeeth that says "the black dog is a devil" is a statement of aqeedah, and therefore cannot be abrogated or denied.
Now the question is, how can we say its abrogated to kill a black dog while we know its a devil? Does it make sense?! |

what I remember from the dars is that initially at first Prophet
![]() Also there is difference of opinions amongst the scholars some say they are impure and others like Maliki scholars say they are pure and hanafi scholars say only the saliva is impure etc. As for keeping dogs you can keep them for hunting, security and also for looking after other animals like sheep dogs. You cant keep them for just for the sake of it there has to be a valid reason. |

Can we get a quick summmary on the black dogs issue? Muslim vol. I, no. 552; vol.II,nos.3803,3829 concerning dogs and in particular black dogs The command to kill dogs was abrogated and its reason in the first place is given further below. In Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Number 1032: Abd Allah ibn al-Samit said: Abu Dharr said: The Messenger of Allah said: "When one of you stands in prayer, what definitely constitutes a barrier for him is an object placed in front of him of the same height as the back of a camel-saddle. If it is not in front of him and of the same height as the back of a camel-saddle, then some [stray] donkey, or some woman passing, or some black dog will cut off his prayer." I said: "O Abu Dharr! What is it that makes a black dog different from a red or yellow dog?" He replied: "O dear cousin! I asked the Messenger of Allah the exact same question. He said that the black dog is a devil." Notes on the legal rulings based on this hadith and its meaning: The passing of the above-mentioned in front of the person at prayer does not invalidate his prayer according to the vast majority of the Imams of Law, Salaf and Khalaf (early and late authorities) who concur that the meaning of "will cut off his prayer" is not literal but means: "will make his prayer imperfect" due to the distraction they will cause in people's hearts, while Imam Ahmad considered that only the passing of a black dog actually invalidates it. This was mentioned by Imam al-Nawawi in Sharh Sahih Muslim and al-Mubarakfuri in Tuhfa al-Ahwadhi. Some of the narrations mention "the dog that bites indiscriminately" (al-kalb al-`aqur). Others: "The jet-black dog" (al-kalb al-aswad al-bahim). The gist of the reference seems to be that a wild-looking dog, or one known to be dangerous, has the greatest potential for distracting attention. The black dog is a devil either literally, i.e. a favored form for a devil to take among animals, or figuratively with respect to its negative aspects whatever these may be; and Allah knows best. Here is another answer concerning dogs in general: "Regarding killing dogs, the Hadith is authentic and quoted in numerous books of Ahaadith. In the pre-Islamic era, dogs were an inseparable part of the Arabs. The negative instincts of dogs have crept into their lives. Rasulullah came to reform them and in order to achieve that, he had to separate them from the inseparable, that is, dogs. He had to create a resentment of dogs in their hearts by emphasising in strongest terms like killing. He also ordered to wash the utensils seven times from which a dog drank. "After the Sahaaba (Radhiallaahu ?nhu) understood the order and resented dogs, separated them from their daily activities, he said [= he made it understood], 'I have no problem with dogs'. He granted leniency in washing the utensils from 7 times to 3 times. After all, using hunting dogs is permissible and [dogs are] mentioned in the Qurân And Allah Taâla Knows Best. Was salaam Mufti Ebrahim Desai FATWA DEPT. |

you can't quote it because there is no such Hadeeth. Please don't make up stuff, remember, the one who lies on the Prophet will have to take his seat in the Hellfire. once again you fail to acknowledge the limits of your very limited knowledge/understanding, just because you haven't seen something doesn't mean the evidences don't exist. if that were the case then of course imam shafie and shaykhul islkam ibn Hajir al'haytami would also be hadith fabricators as you didn't know of their evidences for their rulings (see the "hunting with a gun thread"). i was concerned that the sister you were giving your guidance or rather misguidance to, would go out and start "exterminating" black dogs and wanted to make it abundantly clear to her that that was not according to the shariah. point being that the shariah evolved many times during the life of rasulullah (saws) (the case of the prohibition on alcohol comes to mind). lastly i was quoting what a local scholar said to me. and learning from a scholar is a hundred times better than simply opening a hadith book and coming to one's own conclusions, as it causes one to fall into confusion as they lack context and may not know of all the other ahadith on the subject. |
