Default Bike riding with dogs
Does anyone run their dogs next to their bicycle? I just tried it for the first time with mine (separately of course. If I ran all at once it'd be a mad house) and it went really well. I got a little worried when a dog broke down part of it's fence and was snapping at Madison but all she really did was stop, huff at him, and start again. I was really impressed. Let's hope she keeps that mind set when it comes to strange dogs.

Yup. Roxie LOVES running on the bike!! I have a walky dog attached to her harness, and then a leash connected to a prong (I pretty much just keep my thumb in the handle loop so I can still hold onto the handle bars) for extra control. The walky dog keeps her at a safe distance and keeps her from going all over the place, and with the prong I can give her a correction (if she gets distracted and decides to stop or something like that) so we don't crash. We can go for a long time, and Roxie is insane enough to go for some yard zoomies when I disconnect her from the bike... She's nuts about running and I cant stand running but I love biking, so it works out great!

I do!

Serenity, my Kelpie x seems to enjoy it. I don't go to far at the moment due to the fact I want her to get used to running next to the bike. Its easier when I have to pass people/dogs because she can't react.

I can ride with my Lab x, Sunny but I don't do it often. He try's jerking to the side which doesn't make me comfortable. With the bike attachment I use, I can't feel the jerk that much but I choose not to ride with him often.

Do you use a bike attachment or just a leash? Do you have your dog in a harness or?

I think it's great you're riding with your dogs!

I have a WalkyDog and a thin harness that I wrapped in fleece to prevent rubbing. Boo LOVES bike riding!

Watch the pads of her paws, these silly dogs do not quit until their feet are destroyed.

If another dog challeges us, we just take off, because Boo is much more worried about outrunning me than barking back.

We do about 2 miles at a nice gentle pace, then blast as fast as she can go for a short and very fun sprint.

I wish I could work her up to the 25-30 mile rides I like to go on, but I doubt her feet will ever get that tough (our bike trails are paved) I am thinking of getting one of those trailors of of craigslist that are designed for kids. I'm a little worried about the nerd/crazy dog lady image

The best way to wear her out is chasing the dirtbike all over these crazy Kentucky hills. You do have to be careful with this beause she has absolutely no sense and tries to blast over the huge jumps my son takes.

oh, looks like 3 votes for the WalkyDog! It really does work great. And I found one on Amazon that had bonus lights for my bike for $44 shipped.

Ditto on the pads, I always apply Musher's Secret before we run. It takes a bit for the dogs to learn to enjoy it, so give treats while you're doing it and the dog will learn that paw wax = treats and bike ride so they'll be patient and let you put it on without too much fuss. Roxie actually sits there with this "ahhh, that feels nice" look on her face when I put it on, lol!

Mine was $80! Ga! I had to order mine in.. Then after a week, I saw they had them in the pet store. Things always seem to come out in a store, AFTER I order something.

Sigh.

Boo does not appreciate the Mushers secret. I have the small jar. She was rather angry about it, but I still use it. And, it is GREAT for my elbows and heels. lol

I use the walky dog also, with a stillwater kennel supply leather walking harness, I have not done anything this year since I just had a baby but hope to get back in the groove sometime soon

I use mushers secret too, Goren doesn't care about it but he realizes its on when his paws are not burning on the ground, I can see a visible difference in how he walks with it and without it lol

Yeah, I used to have to lay on top of Roxie to put it on. She never liked anyone or anything touching her paws... I'm very greatful that she's calmed down and will let me clip her nails and put paw wax on.

So far just a leash and a collar. I do want to get them all harnesses and the bike attachment. My Grandmother had a husky that managed to collapse her throat from pulling with just a collar so now I'm starting to feel really paranoid about letting them pull too hard. Is this walky dog thing expensive?

I'm so happy ya'll like running your dogs this way too! I was kind of worried I'd be told it was way too dangerous or something and I've never really seen anyone do it before. Then again I've never seen anyone here even walk their dogs except to meet up and show off their dogs to other dog owners.

hold on... StillWater has a leather harness that works good, does not rub?? Why didn't I know this??

Oh, just looked. I like the "V" front harnesses. If Shane would make a harness like that, I would buy it right now!

yea it works pretty good but Goren doesn't pull much, I want to get him something he can pull against but everything is nylon and his allergy makes that impossible

Hmm. I think I'm going to invest in one. Does anyone have an issue with their dogs pulling sideways too much with it? It looks kind of scary since it's on the back. I get the feeling if my GSD lunges to the side which he tends to do if there's an aggressive dog, I'm going to end up on my head on the pavement.

Here is the WalkyDog on my hybrid bike. I do not use her collar, it was just hanging on there to dry after a cowshit encounter. Honestly, It is the BEST money you could ever spend. It really really works for dampening the force when your dog goes sideways. I tried the leash and almost got killed.

I love biking with Dakota, I don't use a walky dog, but that's mainly because I like to have to ability to move him around, he understands the slightest cues.

Alice on the otherhand... I like to go straight with... she's a dip..s**t.. "Oh something smells good? I should run in front of the tire. Derp."

Madison was doing that a bit too. More so "Oh god I have to watch what you're doing at all times *trip*" I kinda bumped her a couple of times but nothing major. Wish she'd watch me that intently during training!
