Default concerned owner looking for behavior evaluation/trainer in nj
Hi, I have 7 year old pit. He has been a great companion and until dec 2011 was sweet and always friendly. In dec he began showing aggression towards human specially those who approach his face, he has now nipped/scrated 2 people in the face with his teeth (1 small superficial scratch under the eye each time) including myself. I am extremely concerned and need to make a responsible decision. I will be taking him to the vet to rule out any physical reason but I'm also interested in doing a behavior evaluation with a trusted and afforadable professional. I live in jersey city NJ, does any one have any suggestions? I have been in contact with pit bull guru and applaws, does anyone have any experience working with either of these?

Thanks for your help!

Angie

Given his age and how recently this change occured I am betting its a health problem and not a behavioral problem. In the meantime, just keep him away from people.

Couple of things to remember, strangers shouldn't be approaching your dog and getting in his face, also people have to have boundaries with the dog and respect it. Just because you want to be all over the dog it doesn't mean he has to like it.

I have to be honest and tell you that if your dog really wanted to hurt someone he would have torn off their face with no problem. The nipping could be a form of disrespect or avoidance to people getting in his face.

Did you see on the news recently about that dumb ass tv reporter that tried to kiss the Dogo Argentino when the dog was clearly letting her know he wasn't up for it?

Advice- KEEP PEOPLE FROM GETTING IN HIS FACE, INCLUDING YOU. If this is the only time he gets like that, then don't. Most dogs don't like that, and due to age, he could just be tired of it, or not seeing well.

I couldn't agree more!

I never understand why people think it's okay to get in a dog's face...

This....and I would say also take him to the Vet and have him checked out to make sure there is nothing gong on health wise.

yeah... my first question was what was somebody's face doing close enough to get bit. He might be getting to be a grouchy old fart of a dog that doesn't really care to be messed with. The thing is, if he was close enough to scratch, he was close enough to do damage if he'd have wanted to. He was giving a warning. I'd keep that in mind before I let anybody around him much. Hope it works out for you.
