Our Humane Society averages 80% kill rate. Honestly, how can people not know shelters put down healthy and adoptable animals simply to make space? It's not like they want to, they have to. Not to mention I'd rather see a dog put down than go insane from living in a small kennel for years because no one adopted it.

Paralyzing and then lethal injection. Actually more humane than using the gas chamber, which many shelters still do.

I am afraid it happens all the time, they are called kill shelters.

The shelter my dog was pulled from came from a shelter with a 90% kill rate. Thankfully her and her sister were pulled (they day they were to be euthanized, mom was euthed the day they were brought in)

Do I like it or approve of the way they did it, no. But at same time we can't turn a blind eye to it, it happens everyday in a lot of places.

Another reason to Spay and Neuter your pets everyone. Overcrowded shelters are a real reality.

Yup..THIS is why people advocate so strongly that if you are looking for a pet quality dog to get one that needs rescued. There is really no end to it.

This is how we euthanize animals in our hospital- propofol and euthasol. I'm assuming this is the combo they're using as well, or something similar. There is no "liquid that goes directly to the heart" that is painful unless your needle aim is sucky. As long as the euthasol is inside the vein, it travels painless through the circulatory system to the heart where it rapidly stops the heart, once again, painlessly. You may see agonal breathing after, but the animal is no longer conscious and not technically 'alive' at that point.

FYI- An animal that is stuck directly in the heart and thereafter has euthasol administers dies almost IMMEDIATELY; in fact, it dies faster than if the solution was administered intravenously. This article is propaganda and ridiculous, and the people up in arms about it must have been completely sheltered their whole lives.

Are people still in shock that this is how animals are euthanized? What do they think happens, rainbows rain down and little butterflies poke death dust onto the animal and the spirt is magically taken away my pixies?

That, LilianaLove, and the article reads like it was either highly edited from the original or the "reporter" is in 6th grade.

How else do you expect shelters to make room for new dogs?

I don't know why people still get upset that animals are killed. This is the way of the world. There are too many animals and if they cannot get initially adopted then they get put down. If I had my way humans would be included in the mix starting with certain criminals and working from there until we are at a sustainable population again.

Kill shelter are actually better then a No kill Shelter. At least those dogs eventually get a end to their suffering.
