After posting about the a new rescue I also want to rant about our local No Kill Shelter where we DON'T want the dog to end up.
My wife and I both volunteer at this shelter because they are desperate for help and the dogs suffer if people don't volunteer. They have approximately 100 dogs there at any time and probably 70% are Pitbulls. 50% of those are severly HA and housed seperately and handled only by authorized personel. Because it's, "no kill", some of the severly HA dogs have been there for years with no hope of ever being adopted because they should be put down and never placed in public. My position is that these dogs NEED to be put down to make room for adoptable dogs but the owner won't do it. It's her shelter and she can run it like she wants. But, it's seems just as cruel to keep these dogs penned up forever with no hope of adoption. This week, one of the HA dogs got hold of one of the handlers and injured him pretty good and was put down the next day, which is why I'm on this rant. Should have been done a long time ago. So, they wait until something happens with a known HA dog? Stupid. |
