Default I just fell in LOVE with a dog someone emailed to me,anyone worked with a deaf dog??
She is TOO cute!! I just wonder if she is really deaf or not, I know people assume that alot with white dogs when they don't even know. I was asked to come look at her, she is spayed, UTD on shots, and sounds very loving. I just don't know if that would be a challenge for me or not to train a deaf dog, I haven't even been looking for another dog anymore, but this girl was thrown into my lap

I cant say Ive worked with a deaf dog but I acutally trained my boy using hand signals before I ever added a verbal command and it wasnt that difficult. She looks absolutly adorable though!

I wonder if they did a BAER test on her at the vet. That would confirm is she is totally deaf or not. I have worked with some white 'pit bulls' and they weren't deaf. We had a black and white border collie mix puppy who was deaf. My friend fostered her and she got a great home. For teaching signals she used.

http://www.signingsavvy.com

When you type in a word like sit, stay, etc. on that site you will get a sign language you can teach the dog and Kaliope now Kali picked up on it.

Here is a very informative site too.
http://www.deafdogs.org/

You can't just assume she is deaf, a BAER test needs to be done on her if you are willing to adopt her or any other adopter needs to know before you adopt her. In my experience.. not all white dogs are deaf. These dogs are extremely smart.. they can pick up on sign language fairly quickly even if they are deaf. Good luck and keep us posted!

Oh she is cute! I've never personally worked with a deaf dog, although I've known some. I wouldn't have a problem owning one though, as dogs usually respond mostly to body language and hand signals over voice anyway. Go check her out

Yes she looks like she has the cutest personality ever! The only thing I worry about is the no children under 5, but technically, the rescue does not have to meet my daughter :P. I know it is bad to lie, but it is sad to deny a dog a home when the possible new owner is more than experienced with teaching dogs to be calm and behaved around children ya know?

I just didn't know how much of a challenge it would be, she is just too cute not to at least go see, and of course I will take ALOT of pictures

I do know that a lot of people with deaf dogs use vibrating e-collars (not the ones that shock) on them, and they work great to get the dogs attention, etc.

How old is your daughter? I do think the rescue needs to know you have a daughter that's a huge thing that needs to be known especially if they don't know how the dog is with children.

I just spoke with them, she is amazing with children, she just gets hyper and jumps, she is in her puppy stages. I am going to be leaving in 20 minutes to meet her so expect a bunch of pictures in about 2 hours

They have not done testing on her, they think she is deaf because when the dogs go crazy and they open the kennel doors she doesn't even act like she hears it but YET when they call her name she looks

She might just be shutting down, she hasn't been there long, I am going to get some puppy love though be back soon

You still need to let your daughter meet her IMO. Also ask them if a BAER test has been done by a vet. Can't wait to see pictures. I meant to say she is beautiful as well!

Herrrrre are the pictures . She is definitely deaf, I am not sure if she can hear at all, she didn't even sense me slamming my feet on the ground, she is FAR from hyper, actually more lazy than Tyson which is sad, one thing that agitates me to no end, is the original pics I posted from her ad, of course she was SO THIN there, so now she is "healthy" . She is very lovable, but quite timid, nothing to be concerned with, I think she is scared, she didn't run away, and would run to me when I sat on the floor and gave kisses, I just think she misses her family is all, I told them about my daughter, and that I was not worried about her being hyper around her and that they wouldn't ever be together alone, and I taught the pup to sit while I was there , it would be quite hard not speaking though, I caught myself saying no over here girl a few times :P. We went for a walk in the woods, it was nice . They said she was not hyper like normal because she was still on meds from being spayed Monday, but I think she is just calm. They said on the ad 9-12 months but the rescue lady said the vet said 2-3, IMO I see a 6 month old pup, but she does have quite a bit of tarter, I still say she is a young pup though. So here ya'll go

Oh and they said that test hasn't been done yet.

She is pretty!

Casper is deaf and I've fostered a few deaf dogs. I treat the same as hearing dogs, just use hand signals for training.

Gauge is deaf but that does not affect him at all. I trained him with hand signals like the rest of my dogs and he does excellent.

I would love to test him though...he is not completely deaf i don't think...he sure pays attention if you stomp at him.

Yes,..she's a cutie . If you do get her definitely have the BAER test done. They told me the same thing at the shelter when I adopted Powder (avatar). When I saw him his card said he was Poss. deaf. While visiting with him they said he was completely deaf. When I asked if he had been tested at first she said yes. When I asked what kind she said the usual ones that go along with temperament testing. Which he didn't respond to any of them. She did a few while we were visiting and he ignored her for the most part. But he was also preoccupied with some kids he saw coming down the hallway. So while he was fixated on them I whistled and his right ear turned towards me.

I ran into the same thing when I picked him up from the Vet for his neuter. Since I couldn't pick him up until he was neutered. One of the techs that brought him out asked if I knew that he was deaf. It told her he was poss deaf but he hadn't been tested. So she went into how he's completely deaf because she was back there banging on the cage and got no response not even a flinch. That irritated me but I let it go, about 3 mths later I had him tested. I had him for 3 days and saw things that told me he wasn't completely deaf. Before I brought him to Vegas since my sister was keeping him for me until I got out of the military. During that time they came to the same conclusion I had.

Anywayz,.. long story shortened, he's partially deaf. He can hear in his right ear which just so happens to be the one he has the biggest brown spot on .

Just like Olivia.

I am really excited! This will be a new challenge for me, I filled out the application for her, so I guess we shall see if it is fate or not

Another thing, how old do you guys think she looks? I am still sticking by 6ish months, but the tarter on the teeth is a bit much, but I have seen puppies with alot of tarter on their teeth before.....

Oh man... she is CUTE! I had a deaf foster and I agree with everyone who said no biggie, just use hand signals. My foster was so responsive to hand signals and would always ''check in'' visually with me that it was hard to really notice the fact that she was deaf.

I am not sure how old she looks but she doesn't really look 6 months to me.. she is probably older than that but still a young dog.
You won't really know unless a vet confirms it.
