I have 2 white dogs and I don't bathe them unless they really need it. In between time I use bath wipes. Just last week I used one of those sham wow clothes on Powder since he had a few scuff marks from playing with Achilles. Wet it a little rung it out and wiped him down. It worked great, he looked like he had a bath.

Overbathing can contribute to a smelly dog, too! As others have mentioned, bathing strips all of the natural oils from the fur and throws skin pH off. After a bath a dog OVERproduces its natural oils in an effort to replenish what's been lost. If you never let the skin/fur balance, you're never going to get a dog that smells "right." Our dogs only get bathed if they roll in something stinky, get their anal glands expressed or get smelly from not drying (long haired dogs) when swimming. Some of our dogs do not get bathed a single time in a year and they do not stink at all.

Keep the dog outside or keep it clean. If you lose your living arrangement because of a dirty dog, it wont do either of you any good.
I won't loose my living arrangements it was my house to begin with lol. And she is "clean" to me anyways but like said in the original posting they complain she smells like a dog.

---------- Post added at 10:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:19 AM ----------

Use a whitening shampoo when you do bathe her, and if she gets dirty, just use some bath wipes to touch up. Dogs aren't cars, they don't need to be washed once a week. A few times a year, unless they get REALLY dirty, is all they need. If you bathe them too much, you will screw op their skin's pH level.
Yea I actually wanted to but from my experience working with dog grooming and also dealing with her skin that's a no go. The soaps in whiteners are wayy to harsh. Even now I use soap free shampoo and have yet to find a whitener that is soap free. Though I did hear that tropiclean has a soap free whitener but I haven't come accross it.

And yea before you mention it I loooooove tropiclean shampoo cleans good and smells soo good. Eagles puppy shampoo smells like coconut I just wanna eat her up afterwards lol

Jake is white, and I try not to bathe him more than about 3 to 4 times a year. Brushing helps a lot. But, if she is smelling, there are a couple things you can do... Baby wipes work wonders between baths to keep them from smelling bad, I have also used Sea Breeze mixed half and half with water. This takes the smell out also.

Head & Shoulders is great for white dogs.

I'm one of those that think the dogs live with me and not the other way around. My girls are housedogs and they get a bath weekly.

Use a daily soap-free shampoo or something like H&S and RINSE well!!! If you don’t thoroughly rinse obviously their skin will become irritated. Neither of my dogs itch, scratch, nor have dry skin. I completely disagree with people that say you should never wash your dog unless it rolls in something. Maybe some dogs have extra sensative skin or people are using harsh chemicals (flea, etc) and that is what causes dry skin, coat, etc. We simply do not experiece these issues so I'm pro bath!!!

I think white dogs stink more than others. At least that has been my personal experience.

I agree. I foster dogs and a lot come to me with major skin issues from allergies to demodex. Weekly bathing has done nothing but improve the skin on all of them. Never had a problem with it causing dry skin. I get compliments every where I take my dogs and their skin/coats. They are clean, shiny, no dandruff, and no dry skin.

My shorthaired dogs are bathed weekly in the summer months, but we do skip baths in the winter unless necessary b/c I bath outside and it is too cold. My long haired dog is bathed monthly b/c he goes outside 2x a day just long enough to potty and is back in.

Rhys has a lot of white and I only bathe him every 2-3 months. He isn;t a smelly dog at all, even when he gets in the stream, and any mud or dirt falls off him and he goes back to white (gee, wish my white horse did that!!)

You could try to spray some ShowSheen on her. Its for horses, but I know people that use it on their dogs too. I spray it on after a bath an it helps keep them fresher and cleaner. Also makes the fur really shiny and soft.

I like BestShot Pet Products. I use their Lemon-Aid shampoo on Rhys and Baloo, and I LOVE their Ultra-vitalizing mist. It smells so nice and makes them so soft! It is also "soap free" so it is very gentle on their skin.

You might want to reconsider the frequent bathing...It strips the coat oils away.

I use a ''waterless shampoo'' on mine. (Vetrolin green spot out) That or natural baby wipes in between baths.

Uh, they're complaining that your dog smells like a dog? And it's your house? I'd tell them to STFU. If you had a cat, I bet they'd complain that it smells like a cat.

That being said, I wash my dogs seasonally, or when they roll in something nasty, or I find a few fleas. Ethel's brown and white, and all it takes to make her appear clean is waterless spray shampoo and a good brushing. Lots of bathing is too much work, not so great for their skin, and then the house smells like wet dog, which IMO is worse than normal dog stink.

Just tell the room mates to STFU. Dogs are supposed to smell like dog and get dirty. If they didn't, they'd be cats.

It depends on the situation, the owner, and the dog.

Sug has severe environmental allergies during the warm summer months, and a bath every few days is one of the only ways that we've found to combat it without using a lot of drugs on her. I also use a good conditioner with every bath, and just towel it off. The conditioner has kept her skin from drying out. This is something suggested by her vet, and was not my idea, but it works.

Default to those of you with white dogs....
My housemates complain that idont bathe eagle enuff. I think I bathe her 2 much. I bathes her once a month with tripiclean puppy shampoo. But she loves to go out and roll in the grass and tromp though the mud and do puppy stuff. It doesn't bother me a dog is a dog is a dog. But they complain how she smells like a dog and she's off white instead of white. What do y'all think I should do?

I think you should do what you feel is best for your dog and not care what they think.
I almost never bathe Lily, unless we go to the park and she goes swimming/puddle jumping. She doesn't change colors, unless she gets grass stains .

Marsha is a dirty dog. I bathe her, and she is off-white/grayish colored the next day.

As long as she doesn't stink, and there isn't dirt falling off of her, I just leave her. I probably bathe her once a month, as well. More if she gets in the mud.

LOL, first I would tell them she dangwell better smell like a dog

Both my American Bulldogs are white. I honestly can't recall the last time they were given baths... if you bathe dogs too much your taking away from their natural oils from their skin which especially the white dogs need. White dogs can be burned by the sun pretty easily... As for mine... a good part of my back yard is dirty sand (Thanks Freeway... ) So, Bodacious and Dixie are definitely dirty dogs... but I'm also the only human who lives in my house with a total of 8 dogs... so no I don't bathe my dogs too much and if anybody criticized the cleanliness of my dogs... well, then I'd just simply would remind them this is my dogs home not theirs so if they don't like the smell or looks then don't bother coming here...

I think you're bathing once a month is sufficient and your housemates are just looking for something to bicker about... I'd pay them no mind and continue doing what your doing... letting your dog be a dog...

lol i think you need to do what makes you and your dog happy.... I have a dog with alot of white on her and it seams shes dirty within 24 hours of her bath!! they def look better nice and clean and smell beter but she is a dog, so it is what it is id say maybe since you have roomates try and meet them in the middle and try given her a bath like every 10 days or something, its not gonna hurt your dog and it may make your roomates a bit happier but i wouldnt wash her more then once a week at the most because dogs need their nat oils on there skin!!!

I personally think once per week is too much for any dog due to their natural oils
